  • Notes
    • BIRTH:
      - Identified as a sibling of Peter Dolan by John Joseph Dolan, a nephew, in informal notes.
      - Identified as the mother of Mary Ann and Catherine Ellen Mullen, who were born in 1878-1879, suggesting a birth year prior to 1855.
      - Year of birth would be on or before 1854-1855, according to age (22 years) in 1877 Marriage Record for Anne Dolin and Michael Mullan. Ages are sometimes indexed as 22 years when the record actually states that they were "full over 21 years." Father named as John Dolin. Mother not named. Civil Marriage Record obtained from the Irish World Heritage Center (www.rootsireland.ie).

      IMMIGRATION:
      - Immigrated to the United States in 1882, according to a census record for one of her children. A second census record gives the year as 1884. The former is more likely, as her son John Mullen was born in the United States in 1883.

      ADDRESSES:
      - Segronan, Strabane District, County Tyrone, Ireland (1877 Marriage Record)
      - Emigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
      - Her son, John Mullen, was baptized at St. Teresa of Avila RC Church, now closed, but then located at South Broad St. and Catharine St., in South Philadelphia.
      - A possible address for a Michael Mullen, carpenter, in the vicinity of St. Teresa of Avila Church in Gospill's Philadelphia City Directory, 1883, page 1179, is at 1177 South 13th Street (i.e., 6 blocks away from the church address). This address would be consistent with the baptismal record for their son, John Mullen.

      DEATH:
      - Died before 1900, because her children were living with the family of her sister in the 1900 U.S. Census.

SPECULATIVE (BUT PROBABLY NOT THE RIGHT PERSON) DEATH RECORD:
      - A death record for "Annie Mullin," age 25 years, dated 27 February 1883, is in the Philadelphia Death Certificates database on www.familysearch.org. The cause of death was "puerperal convulsions," known today as eclampsia, which is a complication of late pregnancy and childbirth. The address on the death record is 1621 North 26th Street. Burial was in New Cathedral Cemetery.
      - In Gospill's Philadelphia City Directory for 1883, page 1179, a Michael Mullen, saleman, is listed as living at this same address--1621 North 26th Street. So, he would appear to be the husband of this Annie Mullin.
      - A death from eclampsia might be a plausible cause of death a few weeks after the birth of her son John Joseph Mullen on 6 February 1883.
      - As attractive a potential record as this may be, at the same time, this record seems inconsistent with other known facts. Most important, it is inconsistent with the location of the 1883 baptism for John Mullen in South Philadelphia, and the existence in the same edition of the 1883 Philadelphia City Directory of another Michael Mullen, listed as a carpenter (the same occupation as in other city directory entries), living only six blocks from St. Teresa of Avila Church. "Michael," "Annie," and "Mullen" are not uncommon names, so this death record might be a coincidence of a wife in a couple with the same names.
      - More research would be needed to establish this as an unambiguous death record for Ann (née Dolan) Mullen.
