Occupied by William Dolan in 1859, then transferred to his nephew, John Dolan, who farmed this Lot until 1903. John J. Dolan (1884-1971) spent 4 years here as a teenager from 1898-1902. The original house is the structure on the right that now has an ell projecting out (the ell was added later, in the 20th century). It was originally two rooms downstairs and (probably, but no longer) a loft. The building to its left was the original barn. It is now a shed and tool area. Shown with Robert M. According to the recollection of John J. Dolan (1884-1971), there was a large rock in the driveway in front of the barn, and the lot was known locally as "Rock Farm." The current owner confirmed that what I am standing on is that large rock. Over the years, it was used to store turf for the winter, and the resulting organic matter accumulated and grass now covers the rock. Photograph by Marietta Dolan.

Record of John Dolan's 1917 application for a pension, showing that he was found enumerated with his parents, John and Margaret Dolan, in the 1851 Census of Ireland. Since eligibility for a pension required one to be 70 years of age, this indicates a birth year in 1847.

  • Notes
    • BIRTH:
      - Identified as an uncle of John Joseph Dolan, with whom he was sent to live in Ireland after the death of Peter Dolan's wife, Mary Ann Carr Dolan.
      - Year of birth would be 1849-1850, according to age (30 years) given in the 1880 U.S. Census for Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, E.D. 573, page 86A, line 21. Place of birth given as Ireland. Enumerated as a boarder with his brother, Patrick Dolan.
      - Year of birth would be 1846-1847, according to age (37 years) in 1884 Marriage Record for John Dolan and Susan McGuire. Father named as John Dolan. Mother not named. Civil Marriage Record obtained from the Irish World Heritage Center (www.rootsireland.ie).
      - Year of birth would be 1850-1851, according to age (50 years) in the 1901 Census of Ireland. Place of birth given as County Tyrone, Ireland. Enumerated as the head of a family including his wife, Susan, and his nephew, John Dolan, age 16.
      - Year of birth would be 1847, since he applied for a pension with the Irish Old Age Pension program (which paid 5 shillings per week to persons older than 70 years), in 1917. Parents named in his application were John and Margaret Dolan, of Seegronan, Termonamongan Parish, Omagh West Barony, County Tyrone. The application noted that this information was confirmed by checking the 1851 Census of Ireland (which was later destroyed in 1922). The notation here simply states that his record was found in that census, not an age as recorded in 1851.
      - Month and year of birth would be January 1845, according to oral recollection of his great-niece that he was 100 years and 6 months at the time of his death (24 July 1945).
      - Age at death given as 80 years in his Irish Civil Registration death record, but this is not considered a reliable estimate.
      - Since his parents were married in February 1846, a birth date in 1845 is probably not accurate, but the identification of him being 6 months past his birthday when he died is likely accurate, so a birth date of about January 1847 is adopted here as the best estimate.

      IMMIGRATION AND EMIGRATION:
      - According to oral recollections of John Joseph Dolan (1884-1971), his uncle John came to the United States and lives in Philadelphia near 21st Street and Chestnut Streets. He then went back to Ireland to marry Susan McGuire. Tis account is supported both by his appearance in Philadelphia in the 1880 U.S. Census and by his citizenship documented in his later journey back to the United States in 1908.
      - 1908 Ellis Island immigration record states that John Dolan, age 50, returned to the United States on the ship "California," sailing from Londonderry, Ireland, and arriving in New York on 10 August 1908. The ship manifest states that his nearest relative in Ireland was his sister, "Mrs. McKenna" (aka Mary McCanney) in "Coual, Drumquin, Omagh." His destination in Philadelphia was 3714 Wallace Street (the house of his sister, Ellen Dolan McGuire). As noted above, this record states that he was a U.S. citizen, confirming an earlier immigration and naturalization, before returning to Ireland in 1884.

      MARRIAGE:
      - Wife identified as Susan McGuire in oral family history related by his nephew, John Joseph Dolan, to Catherine Dolan Simon.
      - Wife identified as Susan McGuire and full date of 3 June 1884 given in civil marriage record for John Dolan obtained through www.rootsireland.ie. Marriage took place in the "Aughearron RC CH Parish of Termonamongan", in the Strabane District, of County Tyrone. Witnesses were William Dolan and Mary Dolan. Aughearron was located near to Killeter, according to other mentions of the place name on the Internet, and is likely the same place name as Aghyaran, where the local Catholic parish for Killeter is located.

      OCCUPATION:
      - Car driver (1880 U.S.Census)
      - Farmer (1884 Marriage Record, 1901 Census of Ireland)
      - According to oral family history, was also a surveyor.

      ADDRESSES:
      - Not listed in Gospill's Philadelphia City Directory, 1876.
      - 4135 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Gospill's Philadelphia City Directory, 1880, page 473; 1880 U.S. Census)
      - Segronan, County Tyrone, Ireland (1884 Marriage Record)
      - Seegronan Road, Killeter, County Tyrone, Ireland (1901 Census of Ireland). Was the 15th house enumerated on that road in the census.
      - Transferred his tenancy on Seegronan Road prior to 1903 to Charles Logue, who transferred it to Charles Lunny before 1908, according to 1895-1915 Valuation Revision Book for Killeter District, page 28, available online through the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland.
      - Legal records of mortgages (1902) and leases (1907) show that John Dolan continued to farm the land in Seegronan (described as 42 acres, so Lots #3 and 4) after its tenancy formally transferred to Charles Logue and then to Charles Lunney.
      - Arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in August 1908. His passenger manifest record states that his nearest relative in Ireland was his sister, "Mrs. McKenna" (aka Mary McCanney) in "Coual, Drumquin, Omagh." His destination in Philadelphia was 3714 Wallace Street, the house of his sister, Ellen Dolan McGuire. According to oral history from John J. Dolan (1884-1971), he lived near 21st Street and Chestnut Street.
      - He is not enumerated in the 1911 Census of Ireland in County Tyrone, but is also not found in the 1910 U.S. Census for Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. His whereabouts at this time is unknown.
      - Returned to Ireland by 1917, both according to family oral history and according to documentation submitted for his Irish Old Age Pension.
      - Cooel, Dooish, Drumquin, County Tyrone (1917 Application for Old Age Pension, states that his agent for the application had this address.) This is also the address of his sister, Mary Dolan McCanney, so he may have been living with her at this point. He was not enumerated in her household in 1911, consistent with him being in Philadelphia at the time.
      - Dooish, Drumquin, County Tyrone (1945 death record)

      DEATH:
      - Full date and location from Irish Civil Registration death record for John Dolan, widower and retired farmer, a copy of which is in the possession of Robert M. Simon. Informant was James McCanny, nephew, of Dooish, who was present at his death.

      BURIAL:
      - Buried in St. Patrick's RC Cemetery, Drumquin, in the McCanney family plot, according to his great-niece, Rita McDonagh.

      PERSONAL REMINISCES:
      - According to his great-niece, Rita McDonagh, he was extremely religious, and frequently would make the "stations" where he lived. "He could have been a priest", because he was so religious in his observances, according to Rita.
