  • Notes
    • BIRTH:
      - Year of birth given as somewhere between 1863-1868 and place given as Kelletter, County Tyrone, Ireland in handwritten notes by John J. Dolan. The correct spelling is Killeter, a small village in Northern Ireland near Castlederg, in the Strabane District of County Tyrone, close to the border with the Republic of Ireland.
      - Year of birth would be 1855-1856, according to age (30 years) in 1886 passenger arrival list for Peter Dolan. This date agrees with the date given in his 1929 death record, supplied by his brother-in-law.
      - Year of birth would be 1862-1863, according to age (24 years) given in a Declaration of Intent to become a U.S. citizen, dated 8 October 1887. The Declaration of Intent is in the records of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, in volume 25 of "Declarations of Aliens," for September-October 1887, on page 313. On microfilm in the Philadelphia City Archives.
      - Year of birth would be 1866-1867, according to age (34 years) given in 1901 Affidavit for a Marriage License. Place of birth given as Tyrone, Ireland.
      - Year of birth would be 1867-1868, according to age (42 years) in 1910 U.S. Census for Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, E.D. 1131, Sheet 2A, Line 32. Country of birth given as Ireland. Enumerated as Peter Dolan, with second wife Mary Dolan, two children of the second marriage, and one daughter from the first marriage (since her age, 16 years, is greater than the length of the second marriage, 9 years).
      - Year of birth would be 1869, according to age (50 years) in 1920 U.S. Census for Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, E.D. 1174, Sheet 3A, Line 14. Country of birth given as Ireland. Enumerated as Peter Dolan, with wife Mary Dolan and 2 daughters.
      - Year of birth would be 1855-1856, though, according to the age (73 years) given in the Irish Civil Registration death record for Peter Dolan (See below). The death record is proven to be his by identification of Frank McCanney as his brother-in-law, and Peter was living with him and his wife (Peter's younger sister) at the time of his death.
      - No Irish Civil Birth Record for Peter Dolan in Killeter can be found, while records for 2 siblings in 1865 and 1867 have been found. Given that registration of Catholic births began in 1865, and his family promptly complied, a birth year before 1865 seems likely. Since the ages he gave in the United States point to years that are not supported by other relevant records, more weight is given to the age provided at his death by his Irish relatives (including his sister) with whom he was living. This age (and implied birth year) also agrees with the earliest record extent, Peter's 1886 passenger arrival record in the United States. Thus a birth year of 1856 will be assumed.

      IMMIGRATION:
      - According to a duplicate certificate of naturalization obtained by John J. Dolan, Peter Dolan applied for U.S. citizenship on 8 October 1887. He became a U.S. citizen on 25 June 1892 before the Court of Common Pleas #4 for the County of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Given that one must be in the United States for 5 years prior to naturalization, this implies a date of immigration on or before June 1887.
      - The fact that Peter's second Irish-born child was born in January 1886 and his first American-born child was born in January 1888 indicates an immigration date in 1886-1887.
      - Peter served as the baptismal witness for his niece Ellen McGuire on 29 August 1886 at St. Agatha's RC Church in Philadelphia.
      - Peter's likely immigration record can be found in the "New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957" collection on ancestry.com, for an arrival in New York on 9 August 1886 for Peter Dolin, age 30, shoemaker. This record comports with the best estimate of Peter's birth, his known occupation in 1884-1886 in Ireland, and the likely time frame for his arrival between the births of his children in Ireland and Philadelphia. It also is consistent with him being in Philadelphia on 29 August 1886.
      - According to information in the 1920 U.S. Census, Peter immigrated to the United States in 1889 and was naturalized in 1895. However, the more contemporary records above must be given precedence over this recollection in 1920.

      MARRIAGE: Married twice.
      - First marriage was to Mary Ann Carr, according to information from Catherine Dolan Simon, a granddaughter.
      > Wife named as Mary Ann Carr in birth records of John Joseph and Anna Mary Dolan.
      > Wife named as Mary Dolan in 1894 birth record of daughter, Grace A. Dolan.
      > Wife named as Mary Carr in the marriage record of Grace A. Dolan, under the listing of parents.
      - Second marriage was to Mary McKeever, as attested to by family oral history and documentation from vital records and the U.S. Census.
      > Full date for second marriage given as 24 April 1901 in a return associated with the Affidavit for Marriage License No. 135043 (1901), on microfilm in the Philadelphia City Archives (Reel #1237). Return signed by the priest, Maurice A. Fitzgerald. The Affidavit states that this is the second marriage both for Peter Dolan and Mary McGorlick (apparently her married name from her first marriage). In the case of Peter, it states that he was "once married before, and the marriage was dissolved by death at New York about (3) years ago." In the case of Mary, it states that she was "once married before and the marriage was dissolved by Death at Philada. about (7) years ago."
      > Birth return for Elizabeth Veronica Dolan (from this second marriage) confirms that her mother's maiden name was McKeever.
      > The 1910 U.S. Census record names the wife of Peter Dolan as Mary and states that the couple had been married for 9 years, consistent with a marriage in 1900-1901 (and consistent with the 1900 enumeration of several children in an orphanage).
      > Wife also named as Mary Dolan in the 1920 U.S. Census.

      OCCUPATIONS:
      - Shoemaker (1884 birth certificate for his son, John Joseph Dolan; 1886 birth certificate for his daughter, Nan Dolan; 1886 immigration record)
      - Hostler (1889, 1891 Philadelphia City Directories)
      - Laborer (1890, 1893, 1894, 1902 Philadelphia City Directories; 1889, 1902, and 1905 records of daughters' births)
      - Fixer (1892 Philadelphia City Directory)
      - Driver (1894 birth record of daughter, Grace A. Dolan)
      - Motorman (1899 Philadelphia City Directory)
      - Watchman, railroad (1910 U.S. Census)
      - Watchman (Boyd's Philadelphia City Directory, 1911)
      - Filemaker (Boyd's Philadelphia City Directory, 1915)
      - Engineer (Philadelphia City Register, 1919-1920; Polk's-Boyd's Philadelphia Directory, 1925)
      - Watchman, tapestry mill (1920 U.S. Census)
      - Streetcar conductor (Information from Catherine Dolan Simon)

      ADDRESSES:
In the following, the reference to the Philadelphia City Directory for a given year is a reference to the relevant annual volume of "Gospill's Philadelphia City Directory," published in the year mentioned by James Gospill or James Gospill's Sons, both of Philadelphia. Microfilm copies of the directories were viewed in the Philadelphia City Archives, Cabinet Number 0, by Robert M. Simon on 15 October 2010.
      - Pettigo, County Donegal, Ireland (1884 birth certificate of son, John Joseph Dolan, signed by Peter Dolan and listing Pettigo as his dwelling place; 1886 birth certificate of daughter, also signed by Peter Dolan and listing Pettigo as his dwelling place).
      - The first clear reference to Peter Dolan in the Philadelphia City Directories is in 1889, although the birth return submitted for his daughter Margaret in January 1888 gives a Philadelphia street address. Peter Dolan is not listed in the 1888 Philadelphia City Directory, nor in the City Directories from 1882-1884. A Peter Dolan is listed as living in the 900 block of North Delaware Avenue in the 1885-1887 Philadelphia City Directories. For 1885 and 1887, the address is 968 North Delaware Avenue. For 1886, it is 980 North Delaware Avenue. His occupation is given as "laborer" in 1886-1887, but as "puddler" in 1885. A puddler was a highly skilled worker of pig iron in a blast furnace, and it was an occupation that typically was passed along from father to son, or after a significant apprenticeship. It is unlikely that the Peter Dolan from Killeter, Ireland, was this person, and the presence of Peter Dolan in Ireland in January 1886 is conclusive in this regard.
      - 4055 Ludlow Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (January 1888 birth record of daughter; 1889 Philadelphia City Directory, page 487).
      - 11 South 41st Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (December 1889 birth record of daughter; 1890 Philadelphia City Directory, page 504; 1891 Philadelphia City Directory, page 485. This address is just around the corner from 4049 Ludlow Street, less than 250 feet away.)
      - 4041 Ludlow Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1892 Philadelphia City Directory, page 499)
      - 4135 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1893 Philadelphia City Directory, page 501)
      - 4049 Ludlow Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1894 Philadelphia City Directory, page 514; 1894 birth record of daughter, Grace A. Dolan; in the 1900 U.S. Census, this address housed 2 families)
      - 333 East 97th Street, New York City, New York (1897 death certificate of wife, Mary A. Dolan) This record states that Mary A. Dolan had been resident in New York City for 3 years, suggesting a move from Philadelphia to New York City in mid-1894. The dwelling was characterized as a "tenement," defined on the form as "a house occupied by more than two families.")
      - Listed as a baptismal sponsor for a nephew, Francis Sylvester Dolan, in Philadelphia on 27 November 1898, so may have moved back to Philadelphia at this point.
      - 25 South 42nd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1899 Philadelphia City Directory)
      - 5116 Kershaw Avenue (1901 Affidavit for a Marriage License)
      - 5011 Master Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1901 Philadelphia City Directory, page 650)
      - 5144 Harlan Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1902 Philadelphia City Directory, page 621; 1902 immigration record of his son, John J. Dolan -- street rendered as "Harlow"; 1903 Philadelphia City Directory, page 674; 1904 Philadelphia City Directory, page 659; 1905 Philadelphia City Directory, page 680)
      - 1303 Farson Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1910 U.S. Census)
      - 1303 North Farson Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Boyd's Philadelphia City Directory, 1911, page 516)
      - 644 North Yewdall Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Boyd's Philadelphia City Directory, 1915; Philadelphia City Register, 1919-1920; 1920 U.S. Census, Polk's-Boyd's Philadelphia Directory, 1925; 1925 obituary of his wife)
      - According to oral family history from Catherine Dolan Simon and Margaret Dolan Callaghan, returned to County Tyrone and owned a house in Drumquin.
      - According to family history from Irish relatives, returned to Ireland and owned a farm in Pettigo and bought a house at 100 Dooish Road, Dooish, Drumquin, County Tyrone. However, he never moved into this house due to illness, and gave the house to his sister, Mary Dolan McCanney. The house is still owned by her descendants (although a new residence has been built on the site and the former house is used as a storage shed).

      EMIGRATION TO IRELAND:
      - A 1927 arrival record in Ireland for Peter Dolan, age 57, and a watchman by occupation, is in the "UK Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960" database on ancestry.com. Arrival date in Moville, Ireland was given as 7 August 1927, aboard the S.S. Cameronia of the Anchor Steam Line. Sailed from New York, New York to Moville, Donegal, Ireland. Address in Ireland given as Drumquin, County Tyrone.
      - This record makes sense, in that by 1927, both of his daughters from his second marriage to Mary McKeever were themselves married, and his second wife had died. This may have been a factor in his deciding to return to Ireland.

      DEATH:
      - Full date of death of 22 July 1929 given in a "Certified Copy of an Entry of Death" from the General Register Office for Northern Ireland in the possession of Robert M. Simon. Reference Number D/1929/207/1010/5/342. Name given as Peter Dolan, age 73 years. Location of death given as Cooel, District of Drumquin Castlederg, Northern Ireland. Cause of death given as "Cancer of Liver + Rectum 6 months [and] Ascites 10 days." Informant was Frank McCanney, of Cooel, described as Peter's brother-in-law and present at his death. Frank McCanney is known from other records to be the husband of Mary Dolan McCanney, Peter's sister, so this confirms the connection between this Peter Dolan and this death record.

      BURIAL:
      - A 1929 death record for Peter Dolan, died 24 July 1929, age 73, is in parish records of St. Patrick's RC Church, Drumquin, Northern Ireland, transcribed for Robert M. Simon by the parish priest, Fr. Kevin Mullan, and communicated by letter on 15 March 2012.
      - Burial in St. Patrick's Church cemetery, Drumquin, verified by Irish relatives, but the inscription on the tombstone has worn away.
