  • Notes
    • BIRTH:
      - Identified as a brother of Peter Dolan by his nephew, John J. Dolan, in handwritten notes.
      - Relationship of this Patrick Dolan as the brother of Peter Dolan in John J. Dolan's notes is based on the close proximity of residence in the 1880s-1890s in Philadelphia, as detailed below under Addresses, and the consistency of Annie Lynch being Patrick Dolan's wife and the identification of her surname as Lynch in John J. Dolan's notes.
      - Relationship also confirmed by DNA match of a descendant of Patrick Dolan (Leonard R. Dolan III) to that of Catherine Dolan Simon and Robert Simon on Ancestry DNA.
      - Year of birth would be 1856-1857, according to age (23 years) in 1880 U.S. Census for Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, E.D. 573, page 86A, line 21. Place of birth given as Ireland. Enumerated as a boarder with his brother, John Dolan.
      - Year of birth would be 1851-1852, according to age (29 years) in marriage record in Philadelphia Marriage Register for 1881, page 146, line 5, on microfilm in the Philadelphia City Archives (Cabinet 7, Drawer 1, Reel 6). Place of birth given as Ireland.
      - Month and year of birth given as May 1859 in 1900 U.S. Census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, E.D. 660, Sheet 2A, Line 51. Place of birth given as Ireland, with both parents born in Ireland.
      - Year of birth would be 1853-1854, according to age (56 years) in the 1910 U.S. Census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, E.D. 1110, Sheet 9A, Line 43. Place of birth given as Ireland - English. Enumerated as a head of household containing 4 children who were also enumerated with him in the 1900 U.S. Census -- John P., Philip M., Margaret, and Leonard R. Dolan -- thus establishing that this is the same Patrick Dolan.
      - Year of birth would be 1852, according to age (67 years) in 1920 U.S. Census for New Jersey, Essex County, E.D. 230, Sheet 22A, Line 49. Location of birth given as Ireland. Enumerated as Patrick Dolan, boarder in the house of Maria Ferris. This census record is assigned to this particular Patrick Dolan on the basis of (1) similarity of birth year to other census records (although his census ages vary), (2) being listed as a widower, (3) having 1877 as his year of immigration, consistent with the 1900 census, and (4) living in Newark, about 5 miles from his daughter and sons.
      - Year of birth would be 1857-1858, according to age (72 years) in 1930 U.S. Census for New Jersey, Essex County, E.D. 556, Sheet 9B, Line 76. Location of birth given as Ireland. Enumerated as Patrick Dolan, father-in-law in the household of Frank J. McDonough and his wife Mary McDonough (née Dolan).
      - Year of birth would be 1857, according to the age (75 years) at death, as found in the records of Holy Cross Cemetery and listed on the "Lot Inquiry List" for his gravesite provided to Robert M. Simon on 9 August 2011.

      MARRIAGE:
      - Wife's maiden surname identified as Lynch in handwritten notes by nephew, John J. Dolan.
      - Full date of 3 February 1881 and location given in St. James RC Church Marriage Register, Volume 1, page 148, as abstracted for Robert M. Simon in December 2010 by Maria McKeon, Parish Archivist. Maiden name given as Anna Lynch. Witnesses were Patrick McMenamin and Bridget Lynch.
      - Full date of 3 February 1881 also given in Philadelphia Marriage Register for 1881, page 146, line 5, on microfilm in the Philadelphia City Archives (Cabinet 7, Drawer 1, Reel 6). Couple described as Patrick Dolan, resident of Philadelphia, born Ireland, age 29; and Ann Lynch, resident Philadelphia, born U.S., age 23, both Roman Catholic.
      - Wife named as Annie in 1900 U.S. Census for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, E.D. 660, Sheet 2A, Line 52. Record states that they were married for 20 years, translated to a marriage in 1880. This is consistent with the above record in the St. James RC parish registers. In this census record, a 28-year old boarder named Charles T. Lynch is living with the family, which would be consistent with a maiden name of Lynch for the wife.
      - Listed as a widower in the 1910 and 1920 U.S. Censuses.
      - Wife named as Annie Lynch Dolan in his 1933 obituary.
      - Buried next to Annie Dolan in Holy Cross Cemetery, according to the Lot Inquiry List.

      - Served as a witness to the August 1877 marriage of his sister, Ellen, in Philadelphia.
      - Year of immigration given as 1877 in 1900 U.S. Census. Enumerated as a naturalized citizen.
      - Year of immigration given as 1873 in 1910 U.S. Census. Enumerated as a naturalized citizen.

ADDITIONAL FAMILY HISTORY INFORMATION: According to oral family history from John Joseph Dolan, one of his sons became a lawyer based in Chicago, Illinois. This information was roughly correct -- one of Patrick's sons became a lawyer in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

OBITUARY: The following obituary was published in the Newark (NJ) Star-Eagle, 10 January 1933, page 21.
"DOLAN -- At Belleville, N.J., on Monday, January 9, 1933. Patrick, beloved husband of Annie Lynch Dolan. Funeral from 197 Adelaide street, Belleville, on Thursday, January 12, at 8:15 A.M., to St. Mary's Church, Nutley, where at 9 o'clock a solemn high mass of requiem will be offered for the repose of his soul."

      POTENTIAL RECORDS:
      - A potential passenger list record for Patrick Dolan is on the S.S. Victoria, arriving in New York on 19 April 1877 from Glasgow and Moville. The issue here is that Patrick's age is given as 36, which would imply a birth in 1841. On the other hand, he is traveling with John McMenamin, age 27, which is certainly a surname from the Killeter area. An arrival in April 1877 would precede the birth of an illegitimate son in Ireland by two months.
