Location of birth was clearly Kent County, Delaware, given her parent's address in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses and abundant evidence of their continued residence from the 1830 and 1840 Censuses. Consistent with age (10 years) given in 1870 U.S. Census for Delaware, p. 147A, line 1. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated with parents. POTENTIAL FURTHER RESEARCH: In the 1880 U.S. Census, there are only 11 individuals with the name "Elmina" in Kent County, Delaware (according to the search engine at www. ancestry.com). Only one of these has a birth date in 1859: Elmina Melvin (age 21 years, born in Delaware, with both parents also born in Delaware), the wife of Robert Melvin, age 26 years. They are enumerated on page 222A, lines 25-26, with two children, Mary E. Melvin, age 3, and James C. Melvin, age 10 months. Further research is needed to verify if this Elmina Melvin is the same person as Elmina Hurd.
