Notes - BIRTH: The birth date and history of James Hurd are both somewhat obscure.
In the 1850 U.S. Census, p. 259B, line 22, his age is given as 2 months, which would indicate April 1850 as a birth date. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated as James Herd with parents, William and Rachel Herd.
However, the 1850 Census data is at odds with most other data on this family, and the April 1850 date is particularly suspect, since it corresponds to the date of birth of James' sister, Margaret.
Further, while photographs of James as an adult exist, he is not listed with his father and mother in either the 1860 or 1870 U.S. Census. Given the relatively modest circumstances of his parents and the fact that James' siblings are enumerated with other families, one suspects that, by 1860, James was old enough to live and work elsewhere. In fact, in the 1860 U.S. Census, we find a "James Herd," age 17 years, born Delaware, enumerated as a farm hand with Enoch Land (Sand?), p. 642, line 25. In the 1870 U.S. Census, we find a "James Hurd," age 38 years, working on the farm of Thomas West (p. 248).
On the basis of this information (and missing mentions for James with his family), a birth year of approximately 1843 is assumed.
Location of birth was clearly Murderkill Hundred, Kent County, Delaware, given his parent's address in this Hundred in the 1840 and 1850 Censuses.
