Entrance to Lot #3 (as numbered in the 1859 Griffith's Valuation of Tenements for Seegronan Townland) from Seegronan Road. Occupied by William Dolan in 1859, then transferred to his nephew, John Dolan, who farmed this Lot until 1903. John J. Dolan (1884-1971) spent 4 years here as a teenager from 1898-1902. Dolan Seegronan Homesteads - Lot 3 - 02 - Original House and Barn
The original house is the structure on the right that now has an ell projecting out (the ell was added later, in the 20th century). It was originally two rooms downstairs and (probably, but no longer) a loft. The building to its left was the original barn. It is now a shed and tool area. Shown with Robert M. Simon standing in front of the original barn. Photograph by Marietta Dolan; historical information from current owner, Alice Lunney.

    Dolan Seegronan Homesteads - Lot 3 - 05 - The Rock - 1
According to the recollection of John J. Dolan (1884-1971), there was a large rock in the driveway in front of the barn, and the lot was known locally as "Rock Farm." The current owner confirmed that what I am standing on is that large rock. Over the years, it was used to store turf for the winter, and the resulting organic matter accumulated and grass now covers the rock. Photograph by Marietta Dolan.

  • Notes
    • BIRTH:
      - Full date of 25 July 1884, and place of birth of Pettigo, County Donegal, Ireland from Republic of Ireland Birth Certificate Registration Number 9252687, issued to Robert M. Simon on 29 September 2010. Certificate contains a photocopy of the Birth Register for the Superintendent Registrar's District of Donegal in County Donegal, which states that John Joseph Dolen, male, was born on 25 July 1884 in Pettigo. Parents named as Peter Dolen, living in Pettigo, and Mary Ann Dolen, formerly Carr. Registration entry date was 26 July 1884 and was signed by Peter Dolen, father. Pettigo is the village where Mary Ann Carr's family lived and where John Dolan's sister, Nan, was sent to live after their mother died in 1897.
      - The above birth record is also indexed online in the Irish Civil Registration Index. The Irish Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958, show a birth record for a "John Joseph Dolen," in the Jul-Sep 1884 Quarter, for Donegal. Film Number 101060, Volume 2, Page 3, Digital Folder Number 4193461, Image Number 00206.
      - The above information is supported by several other independent sources of information, as follows:
      > Year of birth would be 1884, according to the recollection of his daughter, Catherine Dolan Simon, that John Dolan was 13 years old when his mother died. His mother's date of death was 30 July 1897. According to John Dolan's immigration data, he left the United States for Ireland in 1898.
      > Year of birth would be 1884, according to age (16 years) given in 1901 Census of Ireland. Enumerated as a nephew in the household of John Dolan, farmer, living at the 15th house enumerated on Seegronan Road, Killeter, County Tyrone, Ireland. Place of birth given as County Donegal, which was the locale of his mother's family, the Carr family. Census form can be seen on the internet at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001181479/.
      > Year of birth would be 1884, according to age (18 years) given in 1902 passenger manifest for return sailing trip from Ireland to the United States, below. Nationality given in manifest was Irish (not American).
      > Full date of 27 July 1884 given in World War II Draft Registration Card for John J. Dolan. Place of birth given as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Card image online at www.ancestry.com and copy in the possession of Robert M. Simon.

      INACCURATE BIRTH YEAR INFORMATION
After 1905, with the exception of his World War II Draft Registration, information that relies on forms filled out by John J. Dolan or otherwise relying on him as the primary source of information show that he consistently stated that he was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in birth years that generally made him look 5 years younger than he actually was. After being married, he suddenly changed his age to a younger age consistent with an 1889 birth, according to family history information provided by Catherine Dolan Simon. Moreover, he also altered the birth and death information of family members to support the idea of his being born in the Philadelphia in 1889. The birth registers for the City of Philadelphia, searched by Robert M. Simon at the Philadelphia City Archives in 2010, show no entries for a birth for John Joseph Dolan in 1884-1889. The records that show this inaccurate information are as follows:
      - Full date of 27 July 1889 and location (Philadelphia) from U.S. passport of John J. Dolan.
      - Full date of birth also given as 27 July 1889 in Social Security Death Index entry for John Dolan. SSN: 163-28-5235, issued in Pennsylvania.
      - Year of birth given as 1889 on tombstone inscription in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, Pennsylvania, recorded by Robert M. Simon on 29 October 2006.
      - Year of birth would be 1887, according to age (32 years) in 1920 U.S. Census for Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, E.D. 1655, Sheet 1B, Line 98. State of birth given as Pennsylvania, with both parents born in Ireland. Enumerated as John J. Dolan with wife, Catherine B. Dolan, born in Delaware, and Belauh Hoke, a roomer.
      - Year of birth would be 1888-1889, according to age (41 years) in 1930 U.S. Census for Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, E.D. 51-216, Sheet 11A, Line 28. State of birth given as Pennsylvania, with both parents born in Irish Free State. Enumerated as John J. Dolan, with wife Catherine B. Dolan and two children.
      - Year of birth would be 1889-1890, according to age (50 years) in 1940 U.S. Census for Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, E.D. 51-2242, Sheet 9A, Line 8. State of birth given as Pennsylvania. Enumerated as John F. Dolan, with wife Catherine Dolan and two children.

      MILITARY SERVICE:
      - Believed to have served during the U. S. military occupation of Vera Cruz, Mexico in 1914-1915.
      - Listed as a veteran of World War I in 1930 U.S. Census.

      EMIGRATION AND IMMIGRATION:
      - Arrived for the first time in the United States on 9 March 1887, as part of a group that consisted of his mother, him, and his sister Anna Mary (Nan). This passenger arrival record can be found in the "New York, Passenger Arrivals, 1820-1957" data file on www.ancestry.com. In this record, Mary A. Dolan, age 21, is traveling with John G. Dolan, age 2, and Mary A. Dolan, age 6 months.
      - Went back to Ireland with his mother and sisters in about 1891-1892, as his mother gave birth to her son Thomas Dolan in Tamlaght, where her sister was living. The Irish Civil Registration birth record for Thomas Dolan states that her husband, Peter, was living in America. Thus, he apparently stayed in the United States while she returned to Ireland.
      - Arrived for the second time in American with his mother and sisters on 11 September 1893. A second passenger arrival record in the "New York, Passenger Arrivals, 1820-1957" data file on www.ancestry.com, shows Mary Ann Dolan and her four children traveling back to the United States. The five members of the family arrived in New York on 11 September 1893. This comports with the known birth of the next child in the family in Philadelphia in June 1894.
      - Was sent back to Ireland on the death of his mother, according to family history provided by Catherine Dolan Simon. Both John and his sister appear on the U.K Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960, arriving in Liverpool from New York on the S.S. Teutonic in July 1898. John Dolan, age 11, is listed as passenger number 387, and his sister, listed as Mary, is passenger number 388. Passenger list online on www.ancestry.com. This is consistent with his absence from the 1900 U.S. Census.
      - In Ireland, he lived with his uncle, John Dolan, who had no children and who owned a farm. The thought was that perhaps John J. Dolan would help him and eventually inherit the farm. John J. Dolan was known locally as "Wee John Jacky" and "Yank" was bullied by the other local boys. He resolved to return to the United States and did so at the age of 18. This account is supported by the 1901 Census of Ireland record (listed above).
      - Returned to the United States from Ireland on 2 September 1902, on the ship S.S. Astoria, of the Anchor Line. The Ellis Island Foundation website shows a John Dolan, age 18, resident in County Tyrone, Ireland, returning with a final destination of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to his father, P. Dolan, living at 5144 Harlow Street, Philadelphia, Pa. Record states that he was last in the United States in New York in 1898. John Dolan was a passenger in steerage, and arrived with $20.00.

      MARRIAGE:
Marriage certificate dated May 21, 1919 from St. James R.C. Church, Penns Grove, N.J. Witnesses: Ferd Moore and (Anna) Mary (Dolan) Moore.
Wife listed as Catherine B. Dolan in 1920 U.S. Census.
Wife listed as Catherine B. Dolan in 1930 U.S. Census. Ages at first marriage given as 30 years for both spouses, consistent with a marriage in 1919.
Wife listed as Catherine B. Dolan in 1942 World War II Draft Registration Card.
