Notes - BIRTH AND ADOPTION:
Full date of birth given as 30 January 1860 in family history information compiled by Irene (Rena) Hurd. According to this history, William Henry Dill Hurd was raised after the death of his mother, Mary Hurd Dill (shortly after childbirth), by his grandparents, Thomas and Ann Clark Hurd. He took the last name "Hurd" throughout his life.
Consistent with age (6 months) given in 1860 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, page 283, line 23. At this point, he is enumerated with the other children of Thomas and Ann Clark Hurd, indicating that he was a member of their household. No mention of his mother is in this census record, consistent with the informal family history.
Consistent with age (10 years) given in 1870 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, page 143A, line 23. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated with stepmother and stepsiblings.
Consistent with age (20 years) given in 1880 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, E.D. 42, page 322A, line 23. Enumerated as William Heard in the household of Nathan and Margaret Clark. This record is assigned to William Dill Hurd on the basis of age, lack of enumeration with his family in 1880 (who are enumerated on the next page of the census), and the fact that Margaret Clark was his great-aunt, so it is possible that he would be helping on the farm she shared with her husband.
Year of birth given as 1858 in tombstone inscription for William H. Hurd, as recorded in "Souls in Heaven, Names in Stone: Kent County, Delaware Cemetery Records," by Raymond Walter Dill, William Martin Dill, and Elizabeth Ann Bostick Dill, Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1989, page 436.
Month and year given as January 1859, though, in 1900 U.S. Census for Delaware, Vol. 1, E.D. 77, Sheet 10A, Line 11. State of birth given as Delaware.
Year of birth would be 1855, according to age (55 years) in 1910 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, E.D. 9, Sheet 9B, Line 51. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated as William H. Hurd with wife, Sarah E. Hurd, and children.
Consistent with age (61 years) in 1920 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, E.D. 3, Sheet 3A, Line 35. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated as William Hurd, married, but living alone, consistent with his wife being sick and his children living with other relatives in this census.
Middle name given in death certificate no. 1119 (1932), on microfilm in Delaware Public Archives, Hall of Records, Dover, Delaware. Record does not give father's name, but gives mother's name as Ann Clark. Age on death certificate is "about 77," giving an approximate year of birth of 1855. The informant was Luther T. Calhoon, William Henry [Dill] Hurd's son-in-law, and local subregistrar. The identification of Ann Clark as the mother, but no person as the father, is reasonably consistent with the family history of William, as it might be known over 70 years after the events surrounding his birth by a relative by marriage.
Location of birth in Kent County, Delaware provided in birth certificate no. 3735 (1914) of son, Robert Hurd.
MARRIAGE:
Marriage record in Delaware Marriage Records, Vol. 34, page 248. In Delaware State Archives, Hall of Records, Dover, Delaware.
Enumerated with wife Sarah E. Hurd in 1900 U.S. Census. Census record states that they had been married for 18 years, which would indicate a marriage in 1882.
Enumerated with wife Sarah E. Hurd in 1910 U.S. Census. Census record states that they had been married for 27 years, which would indicate a marriage in 1882-1883.
Tombstone inscription indicates that William H. Hurd is the husband of Sarah E. Hurd.
Sarah Elizabeth David, the daughter of William Thomas David and Araminta Ann Hurd, was the second cousin of her husband, William Henry Dill Hurd.
