OBITUARY: The following obituary was published in the Delaware State News, 20 October 2008, page 5: "Ralph 'Jim' Hurd, 81 “MILFORD - Ralph "Jim" Hurd of Milford passed away Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, in Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 81. “He was born Feb. 19, 1927, in Millington, Md., son of the late Arthur and Mattie (Moore) Hurd. “Ralph served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II. “Early in his working career he worked for Smyrna Home and Hospital, Green Giant and Edgell Construction. He then began a more than 40 year career as a truck driver. When he stopped driving, he moved to California and worked a short time as a truck broker before returning to Delaware. “Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter "Hubby" Hurd, Clarence Hurd and Arthur "Pete" Hurd; a sister, Susie Webber; and a grandson, Jeffrey Williams. “He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Charlotte Hurd; five daughters, C. Ann Lockerman and her husband John of Dover, Barbara Sue Meredith and her husband Jerry of Milford, Ruth J. McDonald of Mil-ford, Ellen L. Morris of Canterbury and Brenda Kay Engel and her husband William of Felton; four sisters, Julia Thorpe of Magnolia, Pearl Ca-hall of Florida, and Martha Allen and Mary Ann Simmons, both of Dover; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. “Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call one hour before services.
