  • Notes
    • BIRTH:
Month and year given as December 1834 in 1900 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, Vol. 1, E.D. 79, Sheet 2B, Line 86. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated as James H. Hurd, the father-in-law of Edward Knotts, in the latter's household.
Consistent with age (26 years) in 1860 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, p. 278, line 5.
Consistent with age (28 years) given in 1862 Civil War enlistment, summarized on a card in the Civil War Military Service Card Index, Delaware Public Archives, Dover, Delaware (see below for details).
Age given as 34 years (indicating a birth year of 1836), though, in 1870 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, p. 144B, line 23. State of birth given as Delaware.
Age given as 44 years in 1880 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, Vol. 1, E.D. 42, Sheet 18, Line 34.

PARENTAGE: In the 1860 and 1870 Census, Major Hurd and an apparent brother, James, are enumerated with the family of James H. and Martha Hurd. Yet, they are listed not with the children of that marriage, but afterwards (and the date of the marriage of James H. and Martha Hurd is several years after their births). Further, James H. and Martha Hurd have a child named James H. Hurd listed in the 1870 Census. So, Major and James Hurd are not the children of this marriage, and are probably not the children of James H. Hurd by a previous marriage (since this would require him to have had his first marriage at or before age 16 and would have also required that he decide to name two sons, from different marriages, after himself). The most logical conclusion is that James H. Hurd is another close family relative (perhaps an uncle) to Major Hurd, and an assignment is made here as the brother of Thomas Hurd (the father of one Major Hurd) and, thus, the son of Major Hurd who was born before 1810.

      MARRIAGE:
Delaware Marriage Records, Kent County, in the Delaware State Archives, Dover, Delaware. Vol. 30, p. 397. This record notes that James Hurd cannot write. Also Vol. 90, p. 40 (Just a record with a date).
1900 U.S. Census for Delaware states that he is a widower.

      ADDRESS:
Whiteleysburg, South Murderkill Hundred, Kent County, Delaware (1870 U.S. Census)
Living with son-in-law, Edward R. Knotts, at the time of the 1900 U.S. Census (and after death of James H. Hurd's wife in 1899), in South Murderkill Hundred, Kent County, Delaware.

      MILITARY SERVICE:
Served as a Union soldier in a regiment of Delaware Infantry, according to biographical sketch of his son in "Montana, its story and biography: a history of aboriginal and territorial Montana and three decades of statehood." Chicago. American Historical Society. 1921. Page 675.
Military service in the Civil War confirmed by card in the Civil War Military Service Card Index, in the Delaware Public Archives, Dover, Delaware. Card states that James Hurd, age 28, joined the service on 22 November 1862 for a 9-month period at Vernon, Delaware. He was mustered into service on 22 November 1862 to Company "H," Sixth Regiment, Delaware Infantry Volunteers. He was discharged at Wilmington, Delaware, on 23 August 1863. He was last paid on 27 June 1863.

      DEATH:
Not buried with wife, Martha, and son, John, in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery. Location of burial unknown.
Year of death given as 1908 in biographical sketch of his son, George E. Hurd, in "Montana, its story and biography: a history of aboriginal and territorial Montana and three decades of statehood." Chicago. American Historical Society. 1921. Page 675.
