  • Notes
    • BIRTH:
Year of birth estimated from age (58 years) given in tombstone in small cemetery plot located at 572 Equitation Lane, near Sandtown, Kent County, Delaware. This is the same cemetery listed as the "Hurd Family Plot" in "Souls in Heaven, Names in Stone: Kent County, Delaware Cemetery Records," by Raymond Walter Dill, William Martin Dill, and Elizabeth Ann Bostick Dill, Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1989, page 552. Equitation Lane is the same as Road 257 (mentioned on page xv of the Dill Book in the description of the Hurd Family Plot). The listing in the Dill book, though, is in error. The actual tombstone (viewed and recorded by Robert Simon on 27 July 2002) says "Mary Hurd / Wife of Thomas Hurd / Died Dec. 9th A.D. 1845 / Aged 58 years" The information in the Dill book misreads the year of death (from an admittedly faint tombstone) and then subtracts 58 to give an erroneous year of birth. Another indication that the Dill book is in error is the fact that the Hurd family did not own the land on which the cemetery exists until 1827. A final indication that this is the tombstone of Mary Harris Hurd is the great similarity in design to the tombstone for her son, James B. Hurd, located nearby in Mount Olive Cemetery.
Oldest female in "Thomas Herd" household listed as age 40-49 in 1830 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, page 305. This is consistent with a birth date for Mary Harris Hurd in the 1780s.
Oldest female in the "Thomas Hurd, Sr." household listed as age 50-59 in 1840 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, page 74. This is consistent with a birth date in the 1780s for Mary Harris Hurd.

NAME: Some sources give her surname as "Harriss". Several records of children (e.g., death certificate of Samuel H. Hurd) identify their mother as "Mary" Hurd, but the link to her surname is, at present, only through the marriage records. An 1803 marriage fits well with the birth dates of children of Thomas and Mary Hurd, and Thomas was known to be resident in Caroline County in 1799-1800. No other marriage records for Thomas Hurd in Caroline County can be found in the Maryland Hall of Records.

      DEATH:
The 1840 Census appears to enumerate her, but she is not listed in the 1850 Census with Thomas Hurd, implying a death during the 1840s.
Full date from tombstone in cemetery plot at 572 Equitation Lane, near Sandtown, Delaware.

BURIAL: Cemetery plot at 572 Equitation Lane, near Sandtown, Delaware. The descendants of the Hurd family owe a large debt of gratitude to the current owners of this property, Cara V. and Ruth Miller, for their care and stewardship of the plot for the last 20 years. Their willingness to buy the land for a residence, with a cemetery on it, prevented the cemetery from being destroyed (apparently, a local real estate agent had been making inquiries as to whether the cemetery could be razed, as it was thought to be a barrier to sale of the land). The Millers cleared the brush, discovered the tombstone and a second grave not listed in the Dill book for a Baby Hurd, and have cooperated with the Delaware Public Archives in preserving and maintaining the site ever since.
