Notes - BIRTH:
Year of birth listed as 1787 in "Biographical and Genealogical History of the State of Delaware," Chambersburg, Pa.: J.M. Runk and Company, 1899, Volume II, page 876.
Exact date of 26 April 1787 on tombstone in Clark family plot in Sandtown, Delaware, listed in "Souls in Heaven, Names in Stone: Kent County, Delaware, Cemetery Records," by Raymond Water Dill, William Martin Dill, and Elizabeth Ann Bostick Dill, Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1989, page 552.
Year of birth would be 1793-1794, however, according to age (56 years) in 1850 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, page 258B, line 4. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated as John Clark, with wife Mary and children, including Sarah, Ellen, George, Samuel, Peter, Enoch, and Ignatius, linking him with this family in other public records, despite the discrepancy in age in this record.
Birth in 1787 consistent with age (73 years) in 1860 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, p. 309, line 12. Microfilm Record Group M-653, Roll 95, National Archives, Washington, D.C.
MARRIAGES:
Marriage Bond for first marriage to "Amey Dehorty" in Delaware Marriage Records, Volume 18, p. 380. In Delaware Public Archives, Hall of Records, Dover, Delaware. Amy Dehorty listed as first wife in "Biographical and Genealogical History of the State of Delaware," Volume II, page 876.
Mary Truitt listed as second wife in "Biographical and Genealogical History of the State of Delaware," Volume II, page 876.
AGE DISTRIBUTION OF HOUSEHOLD:
The 1830 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, page 307, line 19, gives the following age breakdown for the John Clark household. Note that this entry is on the same page of the census as his brother, Samuel Clark, and his brother-in-law, Andrew Green.
1 males age 40-49 Born 1781-1790 (Presumably John Clark, b. 1787)
1 males age 5-9 Born 1821-1825 (Presumably William Clark, b. abt 1823)
2 males age < 5 Born 1826-1830 (Presumably John Wesley and Andrew Clark, b. 1825 and 1829)
1 females age 20-29 Born 1801-1810 (Presumably Mary Truitt Clark, b. August 1800)
1 females age 15-19 Born 1811-1815 (Presumably Margaret Clark, b. 1812)
1 females age 10-14 Born 1816-1820 (Presumably Ann Clark, b. abt 1820)
1 females age 5-9 Born 1821-1825 (Presumably Maria Clark, b. 1821)
1 females age < 5 Born 1826-1830 (Presumably Mary Elizabeth Clark, b. 1827)
This assignment is fairly consistent with the other known facts about the family--note that census ages are as of June 1, so Mary Truitt Clark would have been recorded as 29 at the time of enumeration. The household also included 2 slaves, one female aged 10-24 and one female younger than 10.
OCCUPATION: "Biographical and Genealogical History of the State of Delaware," Volume II, page 876, states that "...John Clark was born at Whiteleysburg, Del. in 1787. He remained at home, working with his father on the homestead. At that time, the eldest heir had the right of acceptance, and at his father's death, Mr. Clark took the home farm and paid the shares to the other heirs. Mr. Clark was a man of fine physique, and of good judgment on financial questions. His educational advantages were very limited, as he could attend the subscription schools only during part of the winter terms; he was, however, taught to read, write, and calculate. Mr. Clark was a Democrat, interested in public questions, and prominent in local political circles."
DEATH AND BURIAL:
Full date listed in both "Biographical and Genealogical History of the State of Delaware" and "Souls in Heaven, Names in Stone." Location of grave in latter book, page 552.
Date of death given as 10 April 1870 in Bible Record provided by James Hughes to the Delaware Public Archives, Hall of Records, Dover, Delaware, Vol 87A, #539.
