      MENTION IN IRISH FOLKLORE COLLECTION:
From 1937 to 1939, the Irish Folklore Commission undertook an innovative project, in conjunction with the Department of Education and the Irish National Teachers' Organisation, in which senior Primary School children recorded in excess of 750,000 pages of local history and oral tradition from across the 26 counties of the Irish Free State. This collection is housed at the University College in Dublin and includes some 18,000 of the children's original school exercise books. This collection has been digitized and the following extract may be found at www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4428268/4390073. The Simon Carr mentioned in this story is almost certainly this Simon Carr (1867-1931), as Drumgorman is on the Doorin peninsula and thus would match the location mentioned, because Fr. Michael Kelly (mentioned in the story) was the pastor at Killymard from 1877-1894, and because a story about a person who died in 1931 would likely still be fresh in local memory 6 to 8 years later.
      "A Holy Well
"In the parish of Killymard (a little distance outside of Donegal) there is a well called 'Fathers Mick's Well,' so named because it was Father Michael Kelly who blessed it. Many people come to visit this well, especially in the summer, and it is said that a lot of people have been cured of serious diseases. The prayers to be said are 'The Lords Prayer and the Hail Mary five times,' and it is the custom to leave a rag or some other article behind on the little wall which is built round the well. The following is one of the cures. 'A man named Simon Carr from the townland of Dooran was suffering from a sore leg. A neighbouring gave Simon particulars about the well, so he resolved to visit it the following day. As soon as he reached the well he did said the usual prayers for the Popes intention, and took a drink of the water. On his way home he had a funny feeling he was going to be cured. When he arrived home the pain gradually lessened until it was completely gone. From that day on the leg never troubled him again.'"

      DEATH:
Full date of 16 September 1931 and location given in 1931 Irish Civil Registration death record for Simon Carr, available from irishgenealogy.ie. Group Registration ID . Cause of death was "probably cardiac syncope." Died on the platform of Dunkineely Railway Station. Informant for this record was John James Conaghan of Dromore, identified as his nephew. According to John James Conaghan's 1900 birth record (also available from irishgenealogy.ie - Group Registration ID 27290), his mother was Bridget Dunnion (thus, the sister of Simon Carr's wife, Sarah Dunion).
Full date of 16 September 1931 also given on tombstone in graveyard of Blessed Mary Virgin RC Church, Frosses, County Donegal Ireland, as photographed by Charlie Carr in September 2018.
