OBITUARY: The following obituary was published in the Washington Post, 2 November 2010:
"Mary Werneke, Volunteer
"Mary Werneke, a past president of the Kenwood Garden Club who volunteered with a number of local organizations over the past half-century, died of multiple organ failure Oct. 25 at Springhouse of Westwood, an assisted living center in Bethesda. She was 98.
"Mrs. Werneke was a founding member of the Friends of the Kennedy Center. She served on the board of the Rock Creek Women's Republican Club and was a member of the Women's Committee of the National Symphony Orchestra.
"She served on the boards of the Washington Club and the old Florence Crittenton Home for unwed mothers.
"Mary Pirtle was born in Sullivan, Ind. Early on, she worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority, where she met her future husband. She moved with her family to Washington in 1942.
"She was a member of St. David's Episcopal Church in Washington, Columbia Country Club and the Metropolitan Club.
"Her husband of 43 years, John Werneke, died in 1982. "Survivors include two daughters, Diane Werneke of Washington and Suzanne Schiffman of Sperryville, Va.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren."
