    Dolan, David C. (1858-1904) | Harding, Fanny (1857-1930) - Passenger Arrival Records
    Dolan, David C. (1858-1904) | Harding, Fanny (1857-1930) - Passenger Arrival Records
1880 passenger arrival record for David Dolan and Fanny Harding, both traveling on the S. S. Canada from Queenstown, Ireland to New York, arriving on 19 May 1880. While later records give different dates for their arrival (in 1875 and 1879 for David, in 1879 and 1880 for Fanny), the proximity of these names on this record, as well as the fact that there are not other records for a David Dolan of this approximate age, and no records of David Dolan living in Cleveland, Ohio, prior to 1881, strongly indicate that this is their actual arrival record.

  • Notes
    • BIRTH:
      - Year of birth would be 1859-1860, according to age (20 years) in 1880 U.S. Census for Ohio, Cuyahoga County, page 89 D, line 22. Place of birth given as Ireland. Enumerated as David Dallan, as a boarder in the household of Case Harding, along with his daughters (including Nannie and Fannie Harding, with whom he is listed on his May 1880 passenger arrival record in New York). The confluence of his enumeration with these two women in this June 1880 record, and the May 1880 passenger arrival record, gives weight to the assignment of "David Dallan" as being the same person as David Dolan. Record available at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9YBV-9X5X.
      - Age given as 26 years as of 15 August 1884 (so his date of birth would have been 15 August 1858) in 1884 naturalization papers for David C. Dolan in Special Naturalizations 1884-1887, Vol 7., page 70, in "Ohio, County Naturalization Records, 1800-1977," on familysearch.org. Native of Ireland.
      - Month and year of birth given as August 1859 in 1900 U.S. Census for Ohio, Cuyahoga County, E.D. 113, Sheet 8B, Line 53. Place of birth given as Ireland. Enumerated as James C. Dolan (which appears to be a censustaker's mistake), with wife Francis M. Dolan and 7 children.
      - Consistent with age (46 years) in 1904 death record. Place of birth given in that record as Ireland.
      - Whether he was born in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland is not clear, based on reports of his birth place by his children in the 1930 U.S. Census:
      > In the 1930 U.S. Census, his son John C. Dolan (living in Missouri) gave his birth place as Irish Free State.
      > In the 1930 U.S. Census, his son David P. Dolan (living in Ohio) gave his birth place as Irish Free State.
      > In the 1930 U.S. Census, his son Thomas F. Dolan (living in Ohio) gave his birth place as Northern Ireland.
      > In the 1930 U.S. Census, his daughter Frances Behrendt (living in Ohio) gave his birth place as Ireland.
      > In the 1930 U.S. Census, his daughter Marie C. Knoll (living in Ohio) gave his birth place as Northern Ireland.
      > In the 1930 U.S. Census, his daughter Agnes L. Kolleda (living in Ohio) gave his birth place as Irish Free State.

      IMMIGRATION:
      - Arrived in the United States in November 1875, according to his 1884 naturalization papers. Naturalized on 30 October 1884 in the Probate Court for Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
      - Year of arrival given as 1879 in 1900 U.S. Census.
      - The only passenger record for a David Dolan with a birth around 1858 is for a David Dolan, age 23, arriving in New York on the S.S. Canada from Queenstown on 19 May 1880, image available at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939V-5YSH-VZ. He is the sixth entry on the lower page in the image. Significantly, he is enumerated just before Nannie Harding and Fanny Harding. Given the difference in his arrival dates between his naturalization certificate and the 1900 U.S. Census, given the fact that he is not found in any Cleveland City Directories before 1881, and given that he was apparently traveling with Fanny Harding, his future wife, this is likely his passenger arrival record.

      MARRIAGE:
      - Full date of 21 September 1881 from Cuyahoga County Marriage Register, Vol. 24, page 414, available at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939K-BJSH-K6?i=253&cc=1614804.
      - Similar record from the registers of St. John's Cathedral, Cleveland, Ohio. Witnesses--Edward T. Hannan and Margaret Ellen Harding.
      - Wife named as Frances M. Dolan in several census records. Number of years married given as 19 in 1900 U.S. Census, consistent with this marriage in 1881.
