It looks a bit like Sckes (comparing the first letter to other instances on the same page), but other researchers have rendered it "Scztes." An oral family history sketch based on the recollection of his sister-in-law gives his surname as "Eckes". Because German priests served the parish, the initial letter may be an "I," yielding "Ickes," a spelling seen in some of the baptismal records of his children. His parents' names in this record are Johann [Same surname] and "Carol." Vedel. The marriage register states that he is from Baltimore, so he was likely born there. The spelling of the surname standardizes as "Eckes" in the records of his grandchildren.
