Location of birth noted in Parish Register, Holy Cross RC Church, Baltimore, Maryland, copied by Edward and Agnes Riesett.
Year of birth would be 1833-1834, according to age (26 years) in 1860 U.S. Census for Maryland, Baltimore, 12th Ward of Baltimore City, page 213, line 7. Location of birth given as Prussia. Enumerated as Charles Gaintz with an apparent brother, August Gaintz (age 23, also a tailor), an apparent mother, Margaret Gaintz (age 68), and his wife Francisens Gaintz. This census page is copied from some other source, so the surname may be a clerical error introduced in the copying.
Year of birth would be 1833-1834, according to age (36 years) in 1870 U.S. Census for Maryland, Baltimore, page 541A, line 5. Location of birth given as Prussia. Enumerated as Charles Zernitz with an apparent brother, August Zernitz (age 30, also a tailor), an apparent mother, Margaret Zernitz (age 73), his wife Francizes Zernitz, and 3 children.
Full date from family history consistent with age (47 years) in 1880 U.S. Census for Maryland, Baltimore. Location of birth given as Prussia. Information from 1880 U.S. Census Index on www.ancestry.com. Entry is for Charles Zarnity, with wife Francisco and children.

Record of entry into the United States on 9 November 1850 in New York, aboard the Ship Ammerland, outbound from Bremen, Germany to New York. Record is for Carl Zernitz, age 17, traveling with apparent siblings and at least one parent. Record indexed as part of "New York, 1820-1850 Passenger and Immigration Lists" on www.ancesty.com. Original image appears to be on "Registers of Vessels Arriving at the Port of New York from Foreign Ports, 1789-1919." Micropublication M237. National Archives, Washington, D.C. Roll No. 94.
Became a naturalized U.S. citizen on 3 October 1855 in the U.S District Court for Maryland in Baltimore. Index card available on ancestry.com.

Record is for Carl Zarnitz, age 26, traveling with Francisca Zarnitz, age 20. Carl Zarnitz is listed, though, as being from Baltimore, so perhaps this is not the record of his first entry into the United States. Record indexed and imaged as part of "New York Passenger Lists" on www.ancestry.com. Original image from "Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, New York, 1820-1897." Micropublication M237. National Archives, Washington, D.C. Roll No. 196, List No. 1036, Entries Nos. 208 and 209, and Family No. 135, in the ship's manifest. This immigration date, coming about 1 month after the marriage date, is consistent with family oral history that they married in Germany just before coming to the United States.
