These are the photos from an album created by Bernard and Mary Zarnitz Simon in the late 1890s, and handed down to their daughter, Bernadine Simon Lorenz. She is responsible for the labels on the photos. Her descendants have given it to Bob Simon for safekeeping, and he has digitized these photos (and inscriptions on the back of photos). A Shutterfly book of the photos in this album, with commentary by Bob Simon, is available -- send an email for more information.

  • Notes
    • BIRTH:
      - Full date given as 14 September 1857 in baptismal record for Anna Elisabeth Otterbein in the baptismal register (Taufbuch, 1830-1876, page 157, entry no. 805) in the parish records of St. Vitus RC Church, Bad Salzschlirf, Germany. Parents named as Andreas Otterbein and Mathildis Reus. Record available at https://data.matricula-online.eu/en/deutschland/fulda/bad-salzschlirf-st-vitus/2-02/?pg=158.
      - Full date given as 14 September 1857 in family history compiled by Nettie Simon Clifton.
      - Consistent with age (35 years, 3 months) given in death record in Register of Interments for Holy Cross RC Church, Baltimore, Maryland. On microfilm in the Maryland State Archives, Maryland Hall of Records, Annapolis. Microfilm no. MdHR M-1918.
      - Full date given as 14 September 1857 in tombstone inscription in Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn, Maryland, for A. Elisabeth Simon, recorded by Robert M. Simon on 23 February 2012.
      - Locality of birth and parents' names given in marriage record in Register of Marriages for Holy Cross RC Church, Baltimore, Maryland. On microfilm in the Maryland State Archives, Maryland Hall of Records, Annapolis. Microfilm no. MdHR M-1918-14.

      IMMIGRATION:
      - Elise Otterbein, age 20, is listed as a passenger on the "Nurnberg," arriving at Baltimore in August 1877 from Bremen, Germany, traveling with Barbara Otterbein, age 32. This appears to be the correct age to be the same person as Anna Elisabeth Otterbein in other records. It is possible that Barbara Otterbein was her half-sister from Bad Salzschlirf.
      - On the other hand, there appear to be two U.S. Census records for Eliabeth Otterbein in the household of John Reus, the earlier in 1870. She was listed as 12 years of age in 1870, but on the other hand, her father had died in 1863 and her mother's maiden name was Reus, so John Reus could have been an uncle or other relative.

      DEATH:
      - Full date given as 10 December 1892 in the Register of Interments for Holy Cross RC Church, Baltimore, Maryland, page 170. On microfilm no. # MdHR M-1918 in Maryland Hall of Records, Annapolis, Maryland. Listed as Elizabeth A. Simon, wife of Bernard Simon. Cause of death given as consumption.
      - Full date given as 10 December 1893 in tombstone inscription in Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn, Maryland, for A. Elisabeth Simon, recorded by Robert M. Simon on 23 February 2012.

BURIAL: Buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn Park, Maryland--Lot 232, Section C--according to Register of Interments.
