de Verteuil, Michel Julien - Birth and Baptism
1773 birth and baptismal record for Michel Julien de Verteuil, from the parish records of Sérignac, Chalais, Charente, France. This image has been enhanced from the original to lessen the writing bleeding through from the following page. Original available in the Departmental Archives of Charente, Registres paroissiaux et état civil, Chalais 1726-1792, 3 E 404/1, at this link. • Notes
    • BIRTH:
      - Full date of birth given as 26 September 1773 in baptismal record for Michel Julien de Verteuil in the parish records of Sérignac, Department of Charente, France (see below under Christening). Sérignac is a small town outside the larger town of Chalais. Parents named as Jacques Alexis de Verteuil, "chevalier de cadre militaire de st. louis et gouverneur de l'isle dieu," and Marie Josephe Dupont de Gourville. This information is consistent with other historical information that his father was governor of the Île d'Yeu off the coast of France at the time of Michel Julien's birth.
      - The birth may have occurred in Sérignac because the Dupont de Gourville family appears to have lived in this parish, so Michel Julien's mother may have chosen to be close to them for the birth (as opposed to giving birth on a small island off the coast of France). The same parish register, on the page after the one recording Michel Julien's birth and baptism, records the 10 January 1774 marriage of Louis Antoine de Fournoy and Anne Dupont de Vivier de Gourville of the parish of Sérignac (Fr: "de cette parroisse").
      - Full date of birth given as 23 September 1773 and location given as Champ Blanc, Sainte-Cécile, Vendée, France, in several sources. However, this information is inaccurate. In addition to the existence of the baptismal record below, a search of the church records of Sainte-Cécile by Alain Leger has shown no records of a birth or baptism of Michel Julien de Verteuil, as described in his notes at this link.
      - Consistent with age (70-80 years) in 1851 Census of Trinidad entry filled out and signed by him, available in the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Place of birth checked as "Foreign Europe."

      CHRISTENING:
      - Full date of baptism given as 29 September 1773 in baptismal record for Michel Julien de Verteuil in the parish records of Sérignac, Department of Charente, France. Godparents named as "Messre Dupont de Gourville lieutenant des navaux de sa majesté et demoiselle Elisabeth Julie de Malbec." His godfather was likely his maternal uncle, who figured in Michel Julien's life later in Trinidad. Record available in the Departmental Archives of Charente, Registres paroissiaux et état civil, Chalais 1726-1792, 3 E 404/1, image 72 of 126, right-hand page, top entry, available online at this link (you must click on an acknowledgment of policies for the reuse of public information before being taken to the image).
      - There is some lore [cf. Anthony de Verteuil, Sir Louis de Verteuil: His Life and Times (Port of Spain: Columbus Publishers, 1973), page 4] that Michel Julien was baptized by Talleyrand (i.e., Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, 1754-1838, the famous French politician and diplomat). This, however, is not accurate, as the baptismal record above is signed by Fr. Girard, the Curé of Sérignac. Moreover, Talleyrand (who in his early career was a priest and then bishop, before being excommunicated in 1791 and then laicized in 1801) was not ordained a priest until 1779, so would not have been able to administer the rites of baptism in any case in 1773. The Talleyrand-Périgord family did serve as "princes of Chalais," the territory that included Sérignac, but this territory was under the control of a different branch of the family, headed at the time of Michel Julien's birth by the half-brother of Talleyrand's father. Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord himself was born in Paris and lived most of his life there, so was unlikely to have spent much, if any, time in Chalais. Still, the family connection to the area may be the spark for this piece of lore.
      - The historic church in Sérignac was the church of St. Peter (Église Saint-Pierre de Sérignac), which was built in the 12th century, but which is practically abandoned today. It is likely that the baptism of Michel Julien took place there.

      MARRIAGE:
Wife identified and year of marriage given as 1799 in Anthony de Verteuil, Trinidad's French Legacy (Port of Spain: Litho Press, 2010), p. 237.
Year of marriage given as 1799 and a presumption that it was a "double wedding ceremony" with that of the older sister of Victoire, who was married in Trinidad, stated in Anthony de Verteuil, The de Verteuils of Trinidad - 1797-1997: A Case Study of a French Creole Family (Port of Spain, Litho Press, 1997), p. 30.
Full date of 13 December 1799 given on marriage contract (in Spanish) of "Don Miguel Julien de Verteuil" and "Dona Maria Adelaida Victoria Legendre," referenced and described in Anthony de Verteuil, After Rain Sunshine (Port of Spain: Digital Press Services, 2018), pp. 137-140.

      SUBSEQUENT FAMILY:
After the death of his first wife, he lived with and had children with a Mlle. Audibert. Evidence of 5 children, born 1821-1841, in 1851 Census of Trinidad entry filled out and signed by him, available in the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

      DEATH:
Full date of death given as 13 March 1865 in de Verteuil genealogical information provided by George F. de Verteuil.
Full date of death also given as 13 March 1865 in Anthony de Verteuil, Sir Louis de Verteuil: His Life and Times (Port of Spain, Columbus Publishers, 1973), p. 8.
Year of death given as 1865 in short essay, "De Verteuil," in Anthony de Verteuil, Great Estates of Trinidad (Port of Spain: Litho Press, 2000), p. 309.
