These are the photos from an album created by Bernard and Mary Zarnitz Simon in the late 1890s, and handed down to their daughter, Bernadine Simon Lorenz. She is responsible for the labels on the photos. Her descendants have given it to Bob Simon for safekeeping, and he has digitized these photos (and inscriptions on the back of photos). - Full date of birth and baptism given in Willebadessen Parish Register in Bistumarchiv Paderborn. LDS FHL Microfilm # 1056022. Baptismal witness--Franz Simon (probably uncle).
- A letter from the parish pastor of St. Vitus Church in Willebadessen, dated 22 February 1881, attesting to the birth and baptism of Bernard Simon, gives the same full dates for his birth and baptism (3 September 1858 and 5 September 1858, respectively). The letter mentions that he was born at 10:00 in the morning. Xerox copy of the letter in the possession of Robert M. Simon.
- Month and year of birth given as September 1858 in 1900 U.S. Census for Maryland, Baltimore, E.D. 299, Sheet 14A, Line 12. Location of birth given as Germany. Enumerated as Bernard Simon, with wife Mary and 4 children and 2 boarders.
- Consistent with age (25 years) in 1884 record of his first marriage to Anna Elisabeth Otterbein. Parents named in this record as Conrad and Sophie Simon.

CONFIRMATION:
Was confirmed as an adult at Holy Cross RC Church, Baltimore, Maryland, on 3 December 1882, according to confirmation records in the church's Confirmation Registers (page 52, entry no. 40). Record lists his parents as Conrad and Sophia, and his confirmation name was Adam. The surname of his sponsor was listed as Otterbein, so it is likely that it was Adam Otterbein.
EMIGRATION:
- Arrived in Baltimore, Maryland on 1 April 1881, on board S.S. Hermann, North German Lloyd Shipping Line of Bremen, bearing 1365 aliens and 6 U.S. citizens. Entry #1027 on passenger list is for "Bernhard Simon, age 22, farmer." Soundex indexes and passenger lists for the Port of Baltimore on microfilm at the National Archives, Washington, D.C.
- 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 U.S. Census entries gives year of immigration as 1881, consistent with the above.
- Traveled back to Germany and returned to Baltimore, Maryland on 23 May 1901, in company of nephew, Edward Simon, on board S.S. Frankfurt. Soundex indexes and passenger lists for the Port of Baltimore on microfilm at the National Archives, Washington, D.C.
NATURALIZATION:
- An index card record exists for the naturalization of Bernhard Simon on 30 September 1892 at the U.S. District Court for Maryland. Witness was John H. Baer, and the certificate number was given as JWC #22,. folio 108. No other records of naturalizations before the U.S. District Court in Baltimore, prior to 1906, exist. Card located in Index 142 at the Maryland Hall of Records, Annapolis, Maryland.
- A copy of this naturalization certificate has been passed down through the family, verifying that this is the correct naturalization information for Bernard Simon.
- 1920 U.S. Census record gives year of naturalization as 1892, further confirming the above.

> 1900 U.S. Census identifies wife as Mary Simon and states that they were married for 16 years. This number refers to the number of years since the first marriage of Bernard Simon, so they must have been confused by the question posed by the census taker.
> 1910 U.S. Census identifies wife as Mary A. Simon and states that they were married for 17 years, consistent with the known marriage date in 1893.
> 1930 U.S. Census identifies wife as Mary A. Simon, and gives ages at first marriage as 25 and 24 years, repectively, consistent with Bernard's age at his marriage to Anna Elizabeth Otterbein (1883-1884) and Mary's age at her marriage to Bernard (1893-1894).
