1873 marriage entry in Register of Marriages for Carn Parish, Pettigo, County Donegal for "Jacobum Dolan de Killeter et Annam Harron".Dolan, James (1835-1885) | Harran, Anne - Marriage
1873 Irish Civil Registration marriage record for the second marriage of James Dolan to Anne Harran.Dolan, Francis and others | Dolan Family Land Records - Killeter Townland - 1828-1929
Summary and analysis of Land Records for Killeter Townland -- in the 1828 Tithe Applotment Survey, 1859 Griffith's Valuation and in subsequent Valuation Revision Books through 1929 -- of lands leased by James and Francis Dolan and their descendants. The chain of custody of leaseholds in this Townland, when compared to Civil Registration Records of deaths and Census Records for 1901 and 1911, provide important evidence of birth and marriage relationships within this family.
-
Notes - BIRTH:
- Year of birth would be 1838-1839, according to age (34 years) in 1873 Irish Civil Registration marriage record for James Dolan and Ann Haron. His father was listed as James Dolan in this record.
- Year of birth would be 1834-1835, according to age (50 years) in 1885 Irish Civil Registration death record.
PARENTAGE:
- In his 1873 Irish Civil Registration marriage record, filed in the Donegal Supervisory District, James Dolan's father is named as James Dolan, and he is listed as being resident in Sesgronan Townland (likely Seegronan Townland -- his lot in Killeter Townland adjoined Seegronan Townland as was reached by road from lots in Seegronan). In the church record for the marriage, James Dolan is described as being from Killeter (which could mean anywhere in Aghyaran parish, judging from how "Killeter" was used in other records in this parish).
- The oldest son of James Dolan's first marriage to Margaret Sweeney is named James, and Irish naming practices often named the first son after his grandfather, supporting the case that James Dolan's father was also named James.
- However, there is no mention of a James Dolan as a land tenant in Seegronan Townland in 1873. Rather, there is a James Dolan who is listed as a sub-tenant of Francis Dolan in Killeter Townland, in 1859 Griffith's Valuation of Tenements for Killeter and in subsequent Valuation Revision books, and this tenancy interest passed to his second wife (Anne Dolan) after his death. This would argue for a connection to the Killeter Townland Dolans.
- It is possible, then, that this James Dolan is a nephew of Francis Dolan, and that he appears as a sub-tenant in the 1859 Griffith's Valuation in this capacity. An unambiguous assignment of his relationship to other Dolan families in the area will have to await further research.
- It is worth noting that a James Dolan is listed in the 1828 Tithe Applotment Book for Termonamongan Parish as resident in Crilly's Hill Townland, and that an 1844 will of James Dolan of Killeter is in the index to such wills in the Prerogative Court (the original will was lost in a fire in 1922). Either of these references to a James Dolan could be to the father of this one. If so, he would have been of the right age to be a brother of Francis Dolan.
MARRIAGE:
- First marriage to Margaret Sweeney attested to by records of children's birth in which both parent's names are given. Margaret died in February 1873.
- Full date and location of October 1873 marriage to Anne Harren provided in Register of Marriages for Carn Parish, Pettigo, online at the National Library of Ireland. Image of the record can be viewed at http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632797#page/87/mode/1up.
- Full date of October 1873 marriage also provided by Irish Civil Registration marriage record, abstracted on rootsireland.ie. James Dolan is described as a widower, consistent with him having been married to Margaret Sweeney previously.
OCCUPATION:
Farmer (Irish Civil Registration birth and death records of his children).
LAND RECORDS: See separate file on Dolan Family Land Records - Killeter Townland - 1828-1929 for summary and analysis of land leases held by this family.
DEATH:
Full date and location given in Irish Civil Registration death record for James Dolin. Occupation given as Farmer. Informant was Anne Dolin of Killeter, identified as his wife. The combination of age, occupation, location, and spouse makes assignment to this individual strongly supported.
