  • Notes
    • BIRTH:
      - Identified as a daughter of Joseph and Caroline Schuette by W. Edward Riesett.
      - Full date of 23 August 1856 and location of Papenburg given in entry 5797 in Ortsfamilienbuch der Kirchengemeinden St. Antonius und St. Michael zu Papenburg (Band II), compiled by Bernhard Norda, Sögel, page 626. Book in the collection of the Diocesan Archives of Osnabrück, and copy of entry provided to Robert M. Simon by the Diocesan Archivist, Dr. Georg Wilhelm, on 20 April 2017. Parents named as Joseph Schütte and Caroline Solaro and full name of Catherine Ernestina Frederica Schütte given in this record.
      - Roughly consistent with age (22 years) in 1880 U.S Census for Maryland, Baltimore, page 394B, line 49. Place of birth given as Hanover. Enumerated as Catharine Schuette, in the household of Ernest Halsenbalg.
      - Month and year of birth given as August 1856 in 1900 U.S. Census for Maryland, Baltimore, E.D. 77, Sheet 2B, Line 78. Place of birth given as Germany. Enumerated as Catherine Meyer, with husband Lambert Meyer and 6 children, all with the same names as those given for the children of Catherine Schuette in the family history compiled by Agnes Simon Riesett. This record states that she was the mother of 10 children, 6 of whom were still living in 1900.

      IMMIGRATION:
      - A record in "Baltimore Passenger and Immigration Lists, 1820-1872" lists the arrival of a Catharina Schuette (or Schnitte), age 19, in Baltimore in May 1876 on the Ship Leipzig, outbound from Bremen, Germany. Abstract on www.ancestry.com. Original record on National Archives Series Number M255, Roll 25, Page 3, Line 70. This is an especially suggestive record, as Catharina Schuette/Schnitte is traveling with Wilhelm Schuette/Schnitte, age 16 years, and they are listed on adjacent lines in the steerage section of the passenger manifest (which is not arranged alphabetically).
      - Year of immigration given as 1871, though, in 1900 U.S. Census.
      - Listed as a witness to her sister Agnes' wedding in June 1879, so clearly in Baltimore as of this date.

      OCCUPATION: Servant (1880 U.S. Census)

      ADDRESS:
177 South Broadway, Baltimore, Maryland (1880 U.S. Census)

      DEATH:
      - The 1910 U.S. Census lists her husband, Lambert Meyer, as in his second marriage, which is 1 year old. Thus, she would have died before this second marriage in 1909.

FAMILY HISTORY SKETCH: The following biographical sketch was written by Agnes Simon Riesett, from oral history that had come down in the family.
"Kate Schuette was the third daughter of Joseph Schuette and Carolina Salerno. We have no dates on Kate. We presume that she was younger than Agnes since Kate took Agnes' place on the farm when Agnes left for America. We know that Agnes paid for her passage to America but we do not have record of when she arrived. She married Lambert Myers who was an engineer on the tug boat 'Elsie,' owned by the Old Bay Line. Lambert was short, fat, with a white beard and a weathered face--a Santa Claus look-alike. They had six children; Carrie, Will, John, Joe, Anne, and Nick."
