Notes - BIRTH:
Full date in tombstone inscription recorded in "Souls in Heaven, Names in Stone: Kent County, Delaware Cemetery Records," by Raymond Walter Dill, William Martin Dill, and Elizabeth Ann Bostick Dill, Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1989, page 1215.
Identified as the son of Harmon Herd, a German immigrant, and Ruth Wildrick by Jennie Arent, a descendant of Robert B. Hurd's younger brother William, in a posting on the Hurd forum on genforum.genealogy.com. In a subsequent personal communication to Robert M. Simon on 19 October 2009, she indicated that the middle initial of "B." stood for Bloom.
Consistent with age (23 years) in 1880 U.S. Census for Pennsylvania, Luzerne County, page 332A, line 7. State of birth given as Pennsylvania, and record states that his father was born in "Germania" and his mother was born in Pennsylvania. Enumerated as Robert B. Herd, with wife Lucy and daughter Rachel. This record establishes that this Hurd family is unrelated to all others in Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
Month and year of birth given as July 1856 in 1900 U.S. Census for Pennsylvania, Wyoming County, E.D. 139, Sheet 5A, Line 41. State of birth given as Pennsylvania, with father born in Germany and mother born in Pennsylvania. Enumerated as Robert B. Herd, with wife Lucy, daughter Rachel, son William B., and numerous boarders, including several Snyder-surnamed ones.
MARRIAGE:
Tombstone indicates that Robert B. Hurd is the husband of Lucy Snyder Hurd.
Supported by 1880 and 1900 U.S. Census records. 1900 U.S. Census states that they had been married for 26 years, indicating a marriage year about 1874.
Supported also by the death certificates of his children William B. Hurd and Rachel E. Hurd, which both name Robert B. Hurd and Lucy Snyder as spouses.
OCCUPATION:
Farmer (1880 U.S. Census)
Boarding house keeper (1900 U.S. Census)
