Notes - BIRTH:
Year of birth calculated from age (4 years) given in 1870 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, p. 238A, line 33. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated with mother and siblings.
Consistent with age (14 years) given in 1880 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, E.D. 36, p. 125B, line 19. Enumerated as Thomas Hurd with widowed mother and brothers.
Month and year of birth given in 1900 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, Vol. 1, E.D. 79, Sheet 12B, Line 53. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated as Thomas Hurd, with wife Mary, daughter Bessie, stepdaughter Florence Peterson, stepson George W. Peterson, and step-granddaughter Ella M. Peterson.
Consistent with age (44 years) in 1910 U.S. Census for Delaware, Sussex County, E.D. 111, Sheet 2B, Line 57. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated as Thomas Hurd with wife, Mary E. Hurd, and two children.
Consistent with age (53 years) in 1920 U.S. Census for Delaware, Sussex County, E.D. 201, Sheet 2A, Line 3. State of birth given as Delaware. Father and mother both born in Delaware.
Consistent with age (64 years) in 1930 U.S. Census for Delaware, Sussex County, E.D. 12, Page 2B, Line 71. State of birth given as Delaware.
Consistent with age (72 years) in Delaware marriage certificate no. 437 (1938) in Delaware Public Archives, Dover, Delaware. State of birth given as Delaware. Parents named as Thomas and Rachel Hurd, both born in Delaware.
Relationship to parents confirmed in deed of 1892 (see Robert P. Hurd).
MARRIAGE:
Thomas Hurd and Mary Clendaniel: Marriage license co-signed by Thomas Hurd and Walter Hurd (Vital Statistics File #2, 1892, in Delaware Public Archives). Marriage also recorded in Delaware Marriage Records, Vol. 90, p. 200, and Vol. 72, p. 21. Latter gives Milford as location of wedding.
Thomas Hurd and Mary E. Peterson: Date and location of wedding given in Vital Statistics File #4, 1905. On microfilm in the Delaware Public Archives, Hall of Records, Dover, Delaware. This date is consistent with the ages at marriage, compared to the ages in 1930, given for Thomas and Mary E. Hurd in the 1930 U.S. Census. Both indicate that, as of April 1930, they had been married 24 years. However, the 1900 U.S. Census for Delaware indicated that both had been married for about 3 years in 1900, and show a child, Bessie Hurd. It seems likely, then, that the couple lived as common-law spouses prior to the marriage in 1905.
Thomas Hurd and Anna Hamond Willey: Full date and location given in Delaware marriage certificate no. 437 (1938) in Delaware Public Archives, Dover, Delaware. Both spouses had been previously widowed. Listed as the second marriage for each (somewhat inconsistent with two previous marriages for Thomas Hurd).
OCCUPATION:
Farm laborer (1900 U.S. Census)
Laborer, odd jobs (1910 U.S. Census)
Laborer, coal pit (1920 U.S. Census)
Laborer, timber wood (1930 U.S. Census)
Laborer (1938 marriage certificate)
ADDRESSES:
Hazlettville, West Dover Hundred, Kent County, Delaware (1870 U.S. Census)
South Murderkill Hundred, Kent County, Delaware (1900 U.S. Census)
Representative District 4, Sussex County, Delaware (1910 U.S. Census)
Chestnut Street, Milton, Sussex County, Delaware (1920 U.S. Census)
Georgetown-Middleford Road, Third Representative District, Sussex County, Delaware (1930 U.S. Census)
Blades, Sussex County, Delaware (1938 death certificate of wife)
Blades, Sussex County, Delaware (1938 marriage certificate for third marriage)
OTHER MEMBERS OF HOUSEHOLD:
Three other individuals are enumerated with Thomas and Mary Hurd in the 1900 U.S. Census for Delaware, on lines 56-58. In order they are Florence Peterson, stepdaughter, born June 1882 in Delaware (and who is listed as having one living child in 1900); George W. Peterson, stepson, born January 1895 in Delaware; and Ella M. Peterson, step-granddaughter, born January 1900 in Delaware (presumably the daughter of Florence Peterson). Based on this evidence, it is adduced that the Mary Hurd in the 1900 Census is the Mary E. Peterson in the 1905 marriage record. This would imply that this is a second marriage for both Thomas (whose first marriage to Mary Clendaniel is linked to a signature by his brother on the marriage bond) and Mary (whose maiden name is not given, but who is suspected, on the basis of age and identity of spouse in her death certificate, to be Mary E. Davenport).
A similar pattern can be seen in the 1920 U.S. Census record. Other household members include, in order, a daughter, "Bessie L. Petterson," age 19, single, born Delaware; a son, "George W. Petterson," age 24, married (or widowed?), born Delaware; a daughter (to George W.?), "Carrie Petterson," age 4 years, 3 months, born Delaware; a daughter, "Mary Petterson," age 2 years, 7 months, born Delaware; and a son, "Joseph M. Petterson," age 11 months, born Delaware.
