    • BIRTH:
A birth year between 1766 and 1774 is indicated by the results of either the 1810 and 1820 U.S. Census, taken together, or the 1790 and 1800 U.S. Census, taken together. The 1830 and 1840 U.S. Census both put an upper limit on his year of birth of 1770. A birth year in the range 1766-1770 satisfies all of these criteria.
Year of birth would be 1757, according to age (93 years) given in 1850 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, Little Creek Hundred, page 64B, line 1. State of birth given as Maryland. Enumerated as George Herd, blind, with the family of Henry and Mahala Ford. It is not at all clear why George Hurd should suddenly be in a different part of Kent County, with a family of unknown relation. This may account for a report of age (and hence birth year) that appears to be at variance with other census records, if this is in fact the same George Hurd.
A notional year of birth of 1767 is assigned for George Hurd, on the thought that it is squarely in the range for all U.S. Census Records except for 1850, and it often happens that an incorrect piece of data is off by some round number (e.g., correct month and day, but wrong year, or in this case, having an age be off by 10 years). State of birth taken as Maryland, in connection with both the earliest possible census record, and the 1850 Census record, which is more direct than the Samuel Hurd death certificate.
State of birth listed as Maryland in 1880 U.S. Census record of son, Samuel Hurd.

MARRIAGE: Spouse identified as Sarah in son Samuel's death record.

DESCENDANTS: Named as father to Samuel Hurd in the latter's death record. Samuel's entry in the Register of Deaths states that George Hurd was born in Delaware.

      POTENTIAL CENSUS RECORDS:
      1790 U.S. Census for Maryland, Queen Anne's County, page 524, line 7.
The 1790 U.S. Census for Maryland gives the following age breakdown for the "George Huard" household.
1 male age >= 16 Born before 1775 (Presumably George Hurd)
      2 males age < 16 Born 1775-1790 (?)
3 white females No age required by census
No slaves are enumerated with the family. Whether this is the same person as this George Hurd is speculative.

1800 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, Mispillion Hundred, page 108, line 28.
The 1800 U.S. Census for Delaware gives the following age breakdown for the "George Hurde" household.
1 male age 26-44 Born 1756-1774 (Presumably George Hurd)
      1 male age 10-15 Born 1785-1790 (?)
2 males age <10 Born 1791-1800 (Presumably George Hurd, Jr. and ? )
1 female age 26-44 Born 1756-1774 (Presumably Sarah Hurd)
      1 female age < 10 Born 1791-1800 (?)
No other free person and no slaves are enumerated with the family.

1810 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, Murderkill Hundred, page 20, line 7.
The 1810 Census gives for Delaware gives the following breakdown for the "George Hurd" household.
1 male age 26-44 Born 1766-1784 (Presumably George Hurd)
1 male age 10-15 Born 1795-1800 (Presumably George Hurd, Jr.)
      2 males age <10 Born 1801-1810 (Presumably Samuel Hurd and ? )
1 female age 26-44 Born 1766-1784 (Presumably Sarah Hurd)
      1 female age 10-15 Born 1795-1800 (?)
      2 female ages < 10 Born 1801-1810 (?)
No other free person and no slaves are enumerated with the family.

1820 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, Murderkill Hundred, page 16, line 24.
The 1820 U.S. Census for Delaware gives the following age breakdown for the "George Hurd" household.
1 male age >= 45 Born before 1776 (Presumably George Hurd)
      2 males age 10-15 Born 1805-1810 (Presumably Samuel Hurd and ? )
      1 male age <10 Born 1811-1820 (?)
      1 female age >= 45 Born before 1776 (Presumably George Hurd's wife)
      1 female age 16-25 Born 1795-1804 (?)
      1 female age 10-15 Born 1805-1810 (?)
      1 female age <10 Born 1811-1820 (?)
The census record states that 1 person was engaged in agriculture (presumably George Hurd) and 3 persons were engaged in manufactures (presumably the women).
A second census record in Murderkill Hundred (two pages earlier, on page 14) enumerates "George Hurd, Junr." The enumerator probably would not have felt the need to do so unless there was a possibility of confusion, so a higher degree of confidence exists that this is the record for George Hurd, Senior. Also, compared to the 1810 Census Record, above, the male who was born in 1795-1800 is missing from this census record, while George Hurd, Jr., appears as the head of household for the first time in this census with a compatible range of birth years (1795-1804).

1830 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, Dover Hundred, page 273, line 7.
The 1830 U.S. Census for Delaware gives the following information for the "George Herd" household on line 5.
1 male age 60-69 Born 1761-1770 (Presumably George Hurd)
1 male age 20-29 Born 1801-1810 (Presumably Samuel Hurd)
      1 male age 5-9 Born 1821-1825
1 female age 60-69 Born 1761-1770 (Presumably Sarah Hurd)
      1 female age 10-14 Born 1816-1820

1840 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, Dover Hundred, Sheet 19, Line 28.
The 1840 U.S. Census for Delaware gives the following information for the "George Hurd" household on line 28.
1 male age 70-79 Born 1761-1770 (Presumably George Hurd)
      1 male age 20-29 Born 1811-1820
1 female age 70-79 Born 1761-1770 (Presumably Sarah Hurd)
      1 female age 20-29 Born 1811-1820
