Notes - BIRTH:
Year of birth given as 1856 in tombstone inscription as recorded in "Souls in Heaven, Names in Stone: Kent County, Delaware Cemetery Records," by Raymond Walter Dill, William Martin Dill, and Elizabeth Ann Bostick Dill, Baltimore: Gateway Press, 1989, page 542.
U.S. Census records, though, point to 1852 as a more likely year of birth.
Month and year of birth given as November 1852 in 1900 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, Vol. 1, E.D. 80, Sheet 6B, Line 63. State of birth given as Delaware. Mother and father also listed as having been born in Delaware.
This is roughly consistent with the age (9 years) given in the 1860 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, p. 278, line 9.
Consistent with age (18 years) given in the 1870 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, p. 144B, line 30. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated with household of James and Martha Hurd.
Consistent with age (28 years) given in the 1880 U.S. Census for Maryland, Caroline County, E.D. 2, Sheet 143A, Line 2. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated as Major Hurd, with wife Nancy and a servant, John W. Wooters.
Consistent with age (58 years) given in 1910 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, E.D. 12, Sheet 4B, Line 71. State of birth given as Delaware. Enumerated as Major Hurd, with wife Nancy and children and grandchild.
Consistent with age (68 years) given in the 1920 U.S. Census for Delaware, Kent County, Vol. 2, E.D. 18, Sheet 10, Line 23.
Full date given in death certificate no. 1825 (1929) on microfilm in Delaware Public Archives, Hall of Records, Dover, Delaware. Record Group RG 1500.092. State of birth given as Delaware.
PARENTAGE:
In the 1860 and 1870 Census, Major Hurd and an apparent brother, James, are enumerated with the family of James H. and Martha Hurd. Yet, they are listed not with the children of that marriage, but afterwards (and the date of the marriage of James H. and Martha Hurd is several years after their births). Further, James H. and Martha Hurd have a child named James H. Hurd listed in the 1870 Census. So, Major and James Hurd are not the children of this marriage, and are probably not the children of James H. Hurd by a previous marriage (since this would require him to have had his first marriage at or before age 16 and would have also required that he decide to name two sons, from different marriages, after himself). The most logical conclusion is that James H. Hurd is another close family relative (perhaps an uncle) to Major Hurd.
The death certificate for Major Hurd (no. 1825) lists his parents as Thomas Hurd and Susan Dill.
MARRIAGE:
Marriage bond recorded in Kent County Marriage Records, Vol. 34, p. 86. Copy of marriage bond has come down through his descendants and is currently in the possession of Sandra Vincent Wood. Date of the bond is 23 December 1879.
Tombstone inscription indicates that Major Hurd is the husband of Nancy B. Hurd.
Listed as husband and wife, but no children, in 1880 U.S. Census.
