Headstones Dolan, Thomas | Family
Tombstone of Thomas and Mary Dolin in St. Patrick's RC Church cemetery, Aghyaran, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Plot used later by Edward and Mary Dolan and Cassie Kelly
Year of birth would be 1826-1827, according to age (88 years) in 1915 Irish Civil Registration death record for Mary Dolan, farmer's widow. Informant was her niece, Catherine Kelly.
Year of birth would be 1851, according to age (50 years) in 1901 Census of Ireland for County Tyrone, Killeter Townland. Place of birth given as County Tyrone. Enumerated as Mary Dolin, widow, along with Catherine Kelly, niece and "domestic assistant."
Year of birth would be 1830-1831, according to age (80 years) in 1911 Census of Ireland for County Tyrone, Killeter Townland. Place of birth given as County Tyrone. Enumerated as Mary Dolin, with Kitty Kelly, "domestic servant." Record also notes that she had been married to her late husband for 30 years.
While there is a considerable divergence among these ages, the one in the Civil Registration death record is taken as being likely the most accurate - ages given to Irish census takers often are inaccurate, especially when provided as round numbers. It is clear that all three of these records are referring to the same person.
Assignment of this Mary Dolan as the widow of Thomas Dolan is supported by a comparison of land valuation and census records. The Housing and Building Returns for the Census of 1901 (Form B1), in column 19, gives the number of the land tract on which the person is living. Mary Dolan is on tract #7, between the tract numbers for John Cunningham and Matthew Young. In the Valuation Revision Book for 1894-1915, the land of Thomas Dolan in 1894, for which Mary became the leaseholder in 1905, is also listed between John Cunningham and Matthew Young. Thus, she is resident on the land leased by William Dolan, so is the same Mary Dolan as in the Land Records, all consistent with being Thomas Dolan's widow.
NAME: Because Catherine Kelly is listed as her niece, and both oral family history and Civil Registration records place Catherine's birthplace near Corgary, it is likely that Mary Dolan's maiden name was either Kelly or McSorley (the maiden name of Catherine Kelly's mother given in her birth and baptismal records). Valuation Records show both Kelly and McSorley neighbors in Killeter Townland, although members of the Kelly family are closer in proximity to the land leased by Thomas Dolan.
Full date of death and location given as 4 July 1915 and Killeter Townland in 1915 Irish Civil Registration death record for Mary Dolan, widow, a copy of which is in the possession of Robert M. Simon. Informant was her niece, Catherine Kelly. Registration number D/1915/38/1010/7/438.
Year of death given as 1895 for Mary Dolin on tombstone of William Dolin in St. Patrick's RC Graveyard, Aghyaran, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Section A, Lot 93. Photograph on www.irishgraveyards.ie. The placement suggests that she was the wife of Thomas Dolin. The problem with this date is that there is no Irish Civil Registration death record for a Mary Dolan in 1895 anywhere in Northern Ireland, and none for a Mary Dolan in the Castlederg District in 1893-1897. This date may reflect an error of memory, as it is on a slab attached to the tombstone that records a series of later dates, beginning in 1960.
