Notes - NAME:
- According to oral family history related by John J. Dolan (1884-1971) to Margaret Dolan Callaghan, the grandfather of Peter Dolan was named John Dolan.
- This information is consistent with the naming pattern for his grandsons--the oldest sons of two of his sons (John and George) were named John, and Irish traditional naming patterns was to name a first-born son after his paternal grandfather.
BIRTH:
Because his son John was born about 1805, it is assumed that his year of birth would have been at least 21 years prior to that, or before 1784.
MARRIAGE:
Based on the naming pattern of the children of his son, John Dolan (1805-1883), this John Dolan's wife may have been named Ellen -- i.e., the oldest daughter of his son carried that name. The other older children of his son's marriage (i.e., the oldest son, second oldest son, and second oldest daughter) followed traditional Irish naming practices and carry the names of their respective grandparents. Since John Dolan (1805-1883) is carrying the name of his grandfather (Sean), he is likely the oldest child of this marriage, and so the marriage may have taken place in the years just before his birth.
POTENTIAL RECORDS:
- The Index to Tithe Applotment Book for Termonamongan Parish, 1828, transcribed and compiled by Len Swindley (online at http://www.cotyroneireland.com/tithe/termonamongan.html), has has an entry in "Seagronan Townland" for "Doalin, John and partners". This could plausibly refer to this John Dolan, or to his son, who was also resident in this townland.
- A will of John Dolin, Killeter, County Tyrone, dated 25 August 1845, is in the Ireland Diocesan and Prerogative Wills & Administrations indexes 1595-1858 on www.findmypast.com. The will was probated in the Prerogative Court. The will itself was destroyed in the 1922 fire at the Four Courts in Dublin. This may indicate a death of this John Dolan in about 1845.
POTENTIAL ADDITIONAL RELATIVES: Records exist of two other Dolan-surnamed male individuals in Seegronan Townland. They may be brothers of this John Dolan, whose birth year would have been in the vicinity of 1784 or earlier, if he was 21 years of age or older at the time of the birth of the oldest of his children, John Dolan (1805-1883).
- The first is Arthur Dolan, who is listed as the tenant on the adjacent lot in Seegronan Townland (Lot #12) in the 1859 Griffith's Valuation of Tenements for County Tyrone. His Irish Civil Registration death record gives his date of death as 1 June 1878, at age 89. The informant was Edward Skey, also of Seegronan Townland. This would place Arthur's birth in 1789. Given his geographic proximity to John Dolan (houses about 20 feet apart), he is recorded on this database as a brother of this John Dolan.
- The second is a Patrick Dolan of Seegronan Townland who died on 9 August 1869 at age 90, according to his Irish Civil Registration death record. This means that Patrick's birth would have been in 1779. The informant for his death was a Mary Dolin of Creduff Townland (which would be Creeduff), a considerable distance away from Seegronan and close to the town of Killen. Although her relationship to him is not stated in this record, she may have been his daughter. The records of the Church of Ireland in Killeter show a marriage between a William Nylans (also spelled Knilans and Nielands in other records) of Creeduff to a Mary Dolin, daughter of Patrick Dolin of Seegronan, on 16 January 1852. It may be that she gave her maiden name (or the registrar wrote down her maiden name) when the death was recorded.
- A death record of a wife to one of the Dolans of Seegronan, Sarah Dolan, is also in the Irish Civil Registration records. She died on 25 February 1868 at age 90. This means she would have been born in 1778. Her informant is William McPhilemy of Meencargie. While there is not a McPhilemy family in Meencarriga Townland of Termonamongan Parish in Griffith's Valuation, there is a family headed by William McPhilemy, Sr., and including William McPhilemy, Jr., in Lot 4 of Altgolan Townland, bordering to Meencarriga Townland, and the road access to this lot shown on the map accompanying Griffith's Valuation passes through Meencarriga Townland (the present-day Scraghy Road). It is possible that one of these two William McPhilemys was a son-in-law, nephew, or grandson of this Sarah Dolan, and undertook the job of registering the death because Patrick was too old. Sarah Dolan may be the wife of Patrick Dolan, as they are about the same age, she is listed as married at her death in 1868, and he is listed as a widower at his death in 1869. Without more information, though, this is a speculative assignment, and she is also not separately recorded in this database.
