Notes - BIRTH:
Year of birth would be 1827-1828, according to age (65 years) on tombstone in Aghyaran Catholic graveyard, Killeter, County Tyrone, Ireland. Photograph of tombstone at http://www.irishgraveyards.ie/graveyard_images/Aghyaran/aghnaPA190092.JPG.
Because her marriage occurred in Pettigo, County Donegal, it is likely that she was born there, as well.
PARENTS AND SIBLING:
Assignment as the sister of Patrick McKane and the daughter of Peter McKane is based on several lines of evidence:
- In both the Dolan and Kane families of Philadelphia, oral history relates that they are cousins.
- In an oral history taken from John J. Dolan by his daughter, Margaret Callaghan, he stated that the Kanes of Philadelphia were known as "McKean" in Ireland, and that they were originally from Lough Derg (the area north of Pettigo). He also stated that Peter Kane was a cousin to Alice Teague's mother (i.e., Mary Dolan McCanney), which suggests that Patrick Kane and Margaret McKane were brother and sister.
- DNA evidence supports this connection. A confirmed great-great-grandson of Patrick Kane (Gregory Kane) is shown in Ancestry DNA as the fourth-to-sixth cousin of a confirmed great-granddaughter of Margaret McKane (Catherine Dolan Simon). The DNA connection involves 25.9 centimorgans across 3 DNA segments, so is fairly robust. If Patrick Kane and Margaret McKane Dolan were brother and sister, Catherine Dolan Simon and Gregory Kane would be third cousins once removed, which would be in the range of fourth-to-sixth cousins as Ancestry DNA counts it.
- The marriage of John Dolan and Margaret McKane was in the Templecarn Parish (Pettigo) Catholic Church, which was the home parish of Margaret McKane. One of the witnesses was Patrick McKane, consistent with her having a sibling of that name.
- The Patrick Kane who emigrated to the United States and eventually Philadelphia named his first son Peter; Margaret McKane named her second son Peter. Traditional Irish naming practice would suggest that both Patrick and Margaret had a father named Peter.
- The baptismal registers of the Roman Catholic parish of Carn at Pettigo, transcribed by John Cunningham and Vynette Sage and posted on the internet at the Fermanagh-Gold website lists two McKane families in the 1850s-1870s, headed by Patt McKane and Thomas McKane, respectively, both of whom are listed as living in Ballymacvanny, the area north of Pettigo just adjacent to Lough Derg. For one of these baptisms (the first recorded child of Thomas McKane) a John Dolan is listed as the baptismal witness.
- Thus, it is plausible that Patrick Kane was actually born Patrick McKane in Ireland, and that he was the brother of Margaret McKane, who married John Dolan of Seegronan Townland, Killeter, and who is buried with him in St. Patrick's RC graveyard, Aghyaran, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.
NAMES:
- Margaret Dolan named as the mother of John Dolan (b. 1847) in his 1917 Irish Old Age Pension application, an abstract of which was purchased from ireland-genealogy.com by Robert M. Simon. The abstract notes that this information was confirmed at the time by checking the family's entry in the 1851 Census of Ireland (which was later destroyed in 1922).
- Margret McKane named as the wife of John Dolin of Killeter in two birth records abstracted in the "Ireland: Births and Baptisms" database on www.familysearch.org.
- Margaret McKane also is the name in the 1846 parish marriage record for John Dolan and his wife.
- Margaret Kane also identified as the mother of Patrick Dolan (and hence the wife of John Dolan) by Patrick Dolan's descendants.
- "Mary Kane" named as the mother of Michael Dolan in his 1913 Pennsylvania Death Certificate. However, this entry is written over in ink from an original entry in a much lighter ink or pencil. In the underlying entry, the first name could also be "Marg".
- It is possible that her full name was Margaret Ellen McKane, as the death certificate of her daughter Ellen (nee Dolan) McGuire gives the mother's name as Ellen. There is some occurrence of Margaret Ellen as a combined name in her grandchildren. Alternatively, this listing of "Ellen" may be a result of an mistake, as Ellen Dolan McGuire may have been named after her paternal grandmother (if traditional Irish naming practices were followed in the family).
DEATH:
- Full date of death of 29 March 1893 on tombstone in Aghyaran Catholic graveyard, Killeter, County Tyrone, Ireland. Photograph of tombstone at http://www.irishgraveyards.ie/ graveyard_images/Aghyaran/aghnaPA190092.JPG.
- To date, no Irish Civil Registration death record has been located for Margaret Dolan in this area in 1893. Since her land interest in Lot 11a did not pass to her son John Dolan until 1895, after her death, and since she is buried in the Aghyaran cemetery, it is logical to assume that she was still resident in the area at her death.
